So last week I posted a story during my time working at Carmax, involving !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (the car, not a sexually-transmitted disease). I briefly hinted at an experience I had with a rather attractive client. I might as well just dive into it (this is super long-winded BTW) - sorry!
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
(Full Disclosure: These stories by no means are used to slander Carmax. I really enjoyed my time working there, they sell quality cars, and actually come off as an incredibly ethical company. I worked a lot, and I learned a lot there. I wouldn't hesitate buying a car from them. I just wish they'd hire more car-centric sales people, such as myself)
I was working the 9-6 shift that day. I don't remember what day it was, but it was hot as balls. It was like 5:30pm, and at this point, most associates would just wait out the clock until 6 (you're spending at least 35-45 minutes with a customer), but I decided to take an 'up' (term for putting yourself in the system to get another client). Per usual, despite me being "scheduled" to work until 6, that rarely happened. I'd almost always be there until 7:30. I put myself in the computer, and within a few minutes, I had a customer.
She strolled in with some guy. She was dressed down, like she just got back from the pool, but she was still a solid 8.5. She was maybe 5'10, blond hair, green eyes, olive skin, fit, hourglass figure, in expensive (but not too ostentatious) attire. She suffered resting bitch face, but that didn't deduct from the fact she was the most attractive person to enter my Carmax that month, or perhaps even during the entire time I was there.
I greeted them, and introduced myself, asking what brought them into Carmax (the issue with Carmax's line system, where your associate greets you at the door, is that you come off as like a Walmart Greeter. People get confused and ask for a sales associate, thinking your some sort of charity case the company hired). She was confused and in a light eastern European Accent, she asked for a sales associate. After we cleared up the fact that I'm the sales associate , we got down to business.
She wanted an appraisal on her car (from what I recall, it was like a 2004 or 2005 BMW 330i - Stick!), and she wanted an SUV for all of her real-estate stuff. We did the appraisal, and walked the lot to find something that fit her needs.
The first day with her was super boring. We tested a stripped X5 (not even a nav or heated seats), and she didn't like it because it was slow and too big. She wanted a car that hadn't been owned by a woman, which in her mind eliminated anything that was white or came off as feminine (aka any Audi or newer 3-Series). We looked online and we found a Cayenne that was honestly like the bargain of the century. I scheduled a transfer, and we met again a few days later.
______________________________________________
It arrived. It was a 2009? Cayenne Base with about 30K for (I think) 33k. Surprisingly, Maxcare is super cheap on Porsche's. I think it was $1,800 or so for 120k of coverage with a $100 deductible.
Actual Photo of Cayenne:
This time she came in, she was coming directly from an open house. She had on a really nice fitting dress, big expensive shades, and a pair of 4" stilettos. She got everyone working at Carmax's Attention. Seriously, everyone there stopped what they were doing when she walked in. A solid 9.25.
We looked at the car. Everything was going how I'd want it to. This thing honestly must have somehow slipped through Carmax's pricing strategy - it was like 3 grand less than comps, and was well featured and in great shape.
We did all the boring stuff (license scanning, etc), and we were off. She was with the same friend as last time. He had shotgun, and I had the back to myself. I knew immediately from her taking the driver's seat, she knew how to drive, and she was no feather-foot.
(The test drive loop is maybe 5 miles. It's a pretty good one with a few twisties, a railroad crossing, some stop and go, and a massive unpatrolled straightaway for 2.5-3 miles).
We reached the stoplight, and I told her that this is a good place to let it loose if you want. She turned off the radio, turned off the A/C, closed the windows, turned off traction control, and put the car into manual mode (at this point I'm at a lack of words).
The light turned green. She started somewhat aggressively, but nothing out of the ordinary. Then once we reached 40ish, she put the hammer down. Within maybe about a half a mile, we were passing cars really, really fast. At this point in time at Carmax, I'm used to people maybe hitting 70 here on a good day. I peeked at the speedo and it read 110 as she shifted into 6th gear. We kept going a little more until the light 1/4 a mile further turned yellow. For the record, the base Cayenne isn't quick. But by no means is that thing a slouch. It was perfectly composed at 100+ speeds, and I can honestly say that it's built like a tank.
The funny thing was, during this time I wasn't scared because she seemingly knew what she was doing, unlike half the idiots I had to go on test drives with.
My view for the ride of my life (actual photo):
The rest of the test drive was...silent. I was letting her experience the car, and I was getting all the right signals. I was pretty proud of myself that during my 3 month summer stint at Carmax, I'd be selling a Porsche.
We reached Carmax, and swapped seats (per Carmax Policy). I opened the door for her (chivalry), and realized that during this entire test drive, she was still wearing the 4" heels! I ultimately wonder how she pulled that off. She couldn't have taken them off (they were laced up and would easily take a few minutes to take on and off - I didn't give her enough time for that). I can't drive wearing a pair of Tim's, yet this woman can wearing heels?

We parked it, got out and both she and I were ready to talk payments. I got her approved on the X5 we tested a few days prior at like 3% APR, and this cost less. She got what she wanted for trade on her Bimmer, and this was becoming a complete slam dunk of a deal. That is, until she saw the dent.
I guess somewhere during the transfer process, the Cayenne suffered a blow to the rail above the B-Pillar. While Carmax wouldn't have done anything if this passed the 10 (or 6 - I don't remember) test, it've been fine. However, this dent was absolutely massive. I have no clue how we missed it on the test drive or beforehand.
She didn't want to do anything until that was fixed, and refused to buy it before they fixed it (I don't blame her). My manager gave the option of purchasing it, and then getting it repaired at Carmax, but she didn't trust our paint department to repair it well (great call on her behalf - they suck). She left, and I told her I'd let her know once it was fixed.
The next day I came in, the Cayenne was gone. It was off my hold I had on it, and it was nowhere in sight. At it turns out, the dent was well over $2,000 to repair, and exceeded the amount Carmax wanted to put into it. They sent the car to auction, despite me having a hold on it.
I contacted her, and we tried to find another Cayenne that fit the bill. However, as I said earlier, this one was weirdly inexpensive compared to the others. I couldn't find one how she wanted it.
A few days later, I talked to my buddy working at the local BMW Dealer, he said he sold her a CPO X6 that afternoon.

Awesome story again, and that Cayenne sure looked like the perfect vehicle for her.
Also, turning off A/C AND TC for best performance?! She knows the business.

Keep these stories coming, they're hilarious!
Overall, how did you like working there? I'm looking for a new job and it sounds like a pretty great place to work.

From what I've heard about working at regular dealerships, Carmax is a really good environment. If you need to take time off or get out early, they are super accommodating. Managers are nice, coworkers are nice, and ultimately, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend working there.
However
, there are a few things to consider.
- If you wanna make money, you have to work long hours (I was doing at least 65 p/w)
- Be prepared to be micromanaged like nothing else (they make you listen to your phone calls with your managers to see how you did - it's incredibly awkward)
- The pay isn't all that great. It's 100% commission. I did pretty well because I worked stupid hours.
