So I'm working on getting my 240z all nice and ready for it's big move to Utah. Gonna be doing vintage car registration ($40 one time and no smog? Okay!) and now its time for registration. I went through Geico and can get it for about $230/year, if its in a "carport". I'm living in dorms right now so, no such garage sort of thing. Would they even sell me a policy if I was "street parking" (parking lot) it? I haven't ever done insurance for my vehicles separately from my family, so is there anything dumb I should avoid doing? How is everyone else insuring their cars in college?
Have a 240z burnout for your time...

Hagerty. My Jaguar is 200 a year, and the Corvair is $60 per. They'll ask the value of the car and some other stuff, but they're great to work with.

I don't seem to be able to qualify for Hagerty. Maybe I'm too young (18)?

Another problem with collector car insurance is there's a pretty stringent mileage limit. My project car is insured through Hagerty, but they balked at even allowing 5,000mi per year (I tried to estimate based on my commuting mileage and was way off.) They asked about garage/driveway parking, although I'd imagine they'd probably allow non-public lots as well, otherwise nobody in an apartment complex would ever be able to get insurance.

I didn't even think that was a thing. Kinda weird.

I have USAA. When I had my W123 at school last year it was pretty cheap because I had the mileage limit pretty low. Which was correct for how much I drove it(or didn't drive it). They didn't have a special deal for classic/antique cars though.

I did it again, but said it was modified instead of stock. $350 a year...

Lame. Geico ain't looking so bad I guess. I mean $350 a year is short money for insurance, but still.

Thank you for asking this! I was just about to make a post about the same topic. I need cheaper insurance for my 240 right now. Guess how much I pay a year for it.....
800 fucking dollars. 800 . And then I pay $1,000 a year for my 2005 Subaru fucking Outback. My driving record is totally clean, by the way. Fuck my insurance agent.
I'm too young for Hagerty (23), so I need to find another company that will insure me, hopefully for a shit ton less money.

I didn't qualify as well. It's weird. Had to use Liberty Mutual

I guess Geico is the way to go if you do their vintage vehicle policy. Hagerty sounds like they up the prices for younger people pretty badly...

I don't even think Hagerty insures people under 25, which is complete bullshit. I called them when I was trying to get my Baja Bug insured and they denied me because I was too young.
But get this. My current insurance company only charged me $50 a year to insure the Bug. That's another reason why I'm so pissed about how much they charge me for the Z.
I'll definitely be looking into Geico for the Z now.

I have had Hagerty for a number of years. Since you are young you probably don't qualify. They also require (or required when I signed up) that you garage the car and have a regular daily driver. They have issues with roll bars and will make you fill out a "mod form" of everything you have done. However if you ever have to make a claim they are no-nonsense.
GEICO either partnered with or bought American Collector's in Cherry Hill NJ. That's good.
Just make sure that your policy states "agreed value" and not "actual cash value".
