I can't run it but from what I saw, it was sold at auction and the seller still hasn't taken the ad down.

yes and yes. I know it has a rebuilt title because of theft. So when the cops did find it the insurance company sold it at auction. But there is a lot unknown which I want to know...

The one thing I am wondering- it's a nice car and all, but who the hell steals a Volvo wagon?!

Yeah this is why I am confused. This is how it showed up at auction. From the pic it doesnt seem serious. Im just trying to figure out the past.

It doesnt look too bad, but if I were you, I'd remove the fender and bumper to be sure that all of the front structure is still intact.

Also, your front badge and grille has been replaced.

The one on your car is only on 1998 Model S and V70s

Kinja'd!!!

Your car should have the one that is on this car.

I think it has a rebuilt title because it was actually stolen and then totaled. The value of these makes for a fairly low 'totaled' threshold, but this is a decent amount of damage.

Kinja'd!!!

And yeah, the hood was swapped for a 99/00 one, the 98's (C70/S70/V70/XC70) got black/silver badges, but the wheels and interior are correct for a 98 R. Also, the VIN matches a CL ad for a 00' silver R posted a month ago, but unless the car has had the entire interior trim (walnut here vs aluminum) and front clip swapped out (including the engine, different covers) in the last month, it miiight be a typo.

See this is why I'm confused as hell because the bumper was from this 98 as were the two spare tires I got.

If the hood was too and my side fender, why were they painted but not my bumper itself?

Also strange about the grille is that my rims have the center caps that match the hood badge.

Nope, all 98's got black/silver badges, there was no blue added until 99'.

i think you made the same mistake I did at first. The auction for my actual car ended. I have a 2000. And that was his ad that's still up there.

Kinja'd!!!

this here was my car.

The one you showed is for that 98 that's up for auction.

It really doenst make much sense at all. If I were you, I'd have an experienced mechanic look over the car to tell you if it has any structural damage.

The 'rebuilt' has different meanings in different states, but here are some good guidelines.

Total loss= the cost to repair is more that the market cost to replace. Most cars that are totalled are not 100% total losses. They maybe 'constructive total losses.'

Constructive total loss (sometimes called the 80% rule, varies by state): cost to repair + salvage value of the hulk + towing + storage + impound + expected supplements = 100% of the market value

Volvos are the collision (pun sorry) of fast depreciation and very expensive parts. That makes them pretty easy to justify a total loss from a wreck. A used Lexus RX330 would not total with the same impact because they hold their value longer and the parts are cheaper.

Total theft total loss: Vehicle not recovered after so many weeks. Police have no leads. Insurance pays the customer for 100% of a market value car. Then the car is found (usually damaged, but not always). What to do? Just sell it? Yes, kind of. The insurance company can sell it, but they have already paid as if the car was wiped out. Thus the 'rebuilt' title gets hung on it even if it was never repaired, much less rebuilt.

Some states do not allow 'rebuilt' so if the insurance co pays for a total theft, then a perfectly good Volvo gets cut up in to recycled parts because the law says so.

The past of the car seems very sketchy, Didn't the seller lie about something?

Oh wow *headsmack* so I did, my bad, I didn't even notice the VINs not matching nor the 00' wheels on yours. That photo doesn't quite show totaled levels of damage, unless the fender being shoved back necessitates the door being painted as well and/or deforming of the inner fender/etc. I did my usual google-fu search but came up largely empty. There are oddly two records of loss, almost exactly 3 months apart (Nov 2010, Feb 2011), but the first reason was theft/stripped, the second only theft. Probably just paperwork/reporting issues, I don't see it getting stolen/stripped (really not much of value to anyone but a 98-00 volvo owner), being rebuilt, then stolen again in that time frame unless someone had a very vengeful ex or wanted to commit some complex, convoluted insurance fraud.

Anyway this thing seems to have a pretty interesting history, I'm curious as to how this will develop. Followed.

I'm not positive it is, it's tough to tell from that one photo but I'd say I see a smudge of blue on the emblem (zero blue on 98's), and the grille is identical for all 3 model years.

Edit: Nope, you're right, I saw the other pics he posted and it's definitely a 98 grille and what looks like a non-R front bumper as well (but the R bumpers are comparatively much harder to find). My bad again haha.

He didn't necessarily lie. He just didn't know. From my understanding and sleuthing, someone bought the car from the auction and did the cheap fix on it. He then got it and drove it for a few years. Then sold it. He didn't know the history either.

This is why I want a Carfax. Its really confusing as all hell.

You know I might have to breakdown and buy the report. Because she sure does have a strange strange past. I've got now a whole bunch of people curious.

What makes sense to me, is maybe the first date in 2011 when it was stolen was when it went missing. 3 months later, in 2012, they found it. Since it was "stripped" it got a new entry. That would make sense to me. Seems kinda crazy that the same car is stolen twice in a three month period.

And the reason it has the rebuilt is silly Florida law. I don't think it was ever totaled or got frame damage , just being stolen got it. I noticed looking over the car that only the windshield and two rear door windows are original OEM. The others are an OEM replacement.

The couple that sold it to me have been married over 13 years and lived in the same home for 9. He's held the same job at Waste Management for 7 years. Not a stalker but I look this stuff up. I don't think he did any of the sketchy work

Also what I don't get... Why is my bumper white if the hood and that fender came off the same car and mustve been white. Like its also why I have two spare tires riding on stock S70 rims. I just don't understand why they'd paint two bits but not the last.

Its a total mystery to me.
