I think we are talking bad starter here.

Tried to give a guy at my work a jump, but quickly realized it was kind of futile, his headlights easily came on at full brightness.

When he tries to start his Chevy Blazer (V6) I just hear a tick tick tick and once in a while quiet grinding like noise that doesn't last very long.

You guys think he's SOL.

Well.... As I'm writing this he got it started, the starter, luckily caught. He'll be getting a new one tomorrow though.

when my starter was going bad, it would work fine until the engine was warm. When the engine was warm it would do absolutely nothing (had me puzzled for a while)

I've seen that tick-tick-tick be a bad battery cable and a bad battery before. The solenoid fires, the starter starts drawing amps, the voltages drops, the solenoid let's go, the voltage comes back, the solenoid fires up, the start draws, repeat. Or it's the contacts in the solenoid that sorta make contact, but are worn and can't handle the amperage (have replaced those in the starter in 3 cars ...one of them 3 times. Yeah, my cars are old.)

Ah, that's also what could've been happening. Either way he is taking it into a mechanic, should be something they can diagnose or otherwise they'll start throwing parts at it till they find whatever it is, haha.
