with cars that is.

I'm going to post later a follow up to this

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

as to how I fell for motoring as a hobby, after I fell in love with a car. I'm curious as to what drew everyone here to motoring as a hobby.

Was it a car, was it a crash, was it bred into you from birth? Do you hate cars? Why are you here then?

Oppo/jalop has a very diverse set of car folk; and I'm sure as many different ways into the hobby.

ah what a question. As a kid I loved cars but I knew nothing about them. I always loved playing gran turismo.

It sort of faded away, and then when I tuned 12 (and my brother was getting ready to get his permit) my dad gave me the task of shopping for a car. It started off boring, and then I started looking at BMW's. Then old BMW's. Then I was reading about them on forums. Then I was looking at other cars and learning about all types of cool cars. Then I found jalopnik. Then I found oppositelock. Here I am now.

by reading jalopnik.

all you need to know about cars can be found on jalopnik in opposite lock.

it is where true car culture resides.

I gnawed on too many lead painted toy cars when I was a baby. That and my dad had a 58 bus growing up as his DD, then a brown Duster, then a blue Fairmont and I didnt care they were junk. I was so in love they bought me a 59 bus when I was 9 to tinker on and stay out of trouble. It just grew from there.

My father always liked cars, and I grew around them, he loved drawing them, I guess it's genetics. But I truly fell in love with cars when I watched A lost city and Andy Garcia was driving an Alfa 2000 spider. It still is my dream car.

First time I got behind the wheel to learn, I accidentally did 80mph (was supposed to just maintain 55 on cruise control and hold the wheel steady, I ended up speeding up without realizing it because the cruise control, turns out, didn't work). I haven't slowed down since.

Arguably I started liking cars because everyone else around me liked them (small midwest town, cars were still a 'big deal' and part of your identity) but I didn't love them until I started driving.

Getting given Hotwheels as gifts and going to car shows a lot.

Ever since I was a baby - if I was ever crying or unable to sleep, my dad would take me for a drive. I'd calm down or fall asleep within a few minutes.

I was pretty much born into it, but what cemented it was when my grandpa stuck me in this 33 Ford Pickup when I was only a couple weeks old and its been old cars ever since. Now I own that pickup and the feeling hasn't changed since that first time.

I was given a Ferrari Testarossa Hot Wheels car when I was two. I flushed it down the toilet. The rest is history

I was exposed to car culture pretty early with stories of my dads '57 Chevy in HS and his brothers '55. Dad would also take me to the big car show every year and the drag strip on big events. What really kicked my love of cars into overdrive was frequent rides in my Uncles red Cobra II it was loud and had T-tops to little kid me it was sooo cool compared to my moms Chevette and my dads Tercel (Ahh life in the early '80s). As I grew older Aviation took over as my passion but once I had to wear glasses my dream of being a Military pilot died and I got back into cars in a huge way.

My parents raised me right by giving me the freedom to choose my toys from both the pink aisle and the blue one, and with the exception of a few stuffed animals and a baby doll, I almost exclusively picked out cars. So I guess I've always liked them, just naturally.

I honestly don't remember, probably because I was 2 years old or so. According to my mom, at that age, whenever we would walk around the house I would always end up leading us to the driveway and to to the family cars. She thought it was a bit odd at first, but she quickly realized what was going on. Even before I was talking, my parents would say various car parts and I would point to them. Wheels, headlights, and intake manifold were all words I had learned by that age.

By the time I was reading, my go to were car magazines. Usually Car and Driver and the Consumer Reports Vehicle Guides. There wasn't a late model car that I couldn't identify. We would also go to a lot of car shows, both vintage car shows and new car shows. That's when I started collecting car brochures (I have close to 260 now). It was at that time that I started detailing the interiors of the family cars.

As the years went on, my automotive tastes continued to develop, and I started learning a lot of details about specific vehicles that really interested me (more details than I had ever known before).

I found this place in 2009, and haven't left since.

I was always interested in cars but the moment I really became a car guy was when I started playing Gran Turismo 1.

Kinja'd!!!

I would spend hours reading the biographies of all the cars trying to learn as much as I could about every one of them.

and once this came out I was done for.

I this point a young 16 year old like me was in heaven. Even now 13 years later still nothing else matters all I dream and think of is cars and women.

My dad loves buying and selling cars. Growing up there were always way more cars/trucks/projects/etc in the drive way than the number of adults who could drive in the house. He used to tinker some and show me. When I learned to drive, he wouldn't let me drive a car until I could change oil/fuel filter (we ran biodiesel)/tire/etc. That kinda started the bug.

I got into motorcycles for a while but didn't have any vehicle during 3 years of college. Ended up buying my first Jeep and that's when I was seriously bitten. It has just grown from there.

In a bit of a full circle, my dad is now into Jeeps and tinkering on them because he fell in love with my XJ. He taught me how to work on em and I taught him bout the glory of the 4.0.

This is something I worry about , I'm about to have a little girl and I don't want to steer her towards car, but I would enjoy if she found her way there on her own

You can certainly influence her, and you probably will just by liking cars yourself. I mean, I don't really like sports at all, but my absolute favorite childhood photo is of me holding a football while playing with my dad. So, even if she doesn't end up a gearhead, she'll most certainly appreciate spending time with you, doing what you like.
