Dear stupid people,
Stop putting intakes so low. Or stop putting them above wheels and taking out the fender liner. You want to know why this practically new Hyundai Genesis is on a tow truck? Hydrolock. Some idiot thought that it would be a good idea to install a cold intake above the front wheel and not put a fender liner in place so he could go lower.
He then decided that it would be a good idea to drive it in the rain.
You know what happened in this case? The dude got a $12k check from insurance because of his stupidity. The check went straight to the dealer to replace the engine when the car only had 13k miles.
And you know what the owner said? "I have the worst luck."
YOU DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH LUCK! IF YOU PUT YOUR INTAKE SOMEWHERE WHERE IT WOULDN'T SUCK UP WATER AND DIDN'T THEN DRIVE IT IN THE RAIN, THIS SHIT WOULDN'T HAPPEN!!!!!

But bro, that cold wet intake totally netted him 5 HP for the .5 seconds it took for the water to kill the engine, so it was totally worth it!

Intakes are a mod that I don't do anymore. It's basically ricer levels with most cars.
There are exceptions but these exceptions often have better solutions. Like Skyline intake is all plastic and it can collapse if you put more boost through it. However the solution to that is not to put in some shitty cone filter but to reenforce that plastic with a metal pipe in the section it collapses in on. Keep stock airbox, everything is fine.
I did install an intake in a WRX. It was weird though, there was this compartment for it in the car that was isolated from any area that could get water on it. If I were to own a stock one of those again I wouldn't do it though, the filter was a PITA to get out of that.
What's funny is I even use the regular paper filters now too because i've had bad luck with K&N oil fucking up MAFs on the Nissans i've owned. Keep in mind these are out of box, so I didn't over oil them. 350Z or Skyline limp mode every other week at random while driving with 20 miles to get home is annoying.

I must admit I did put a CAI on my s2000 in a place that made it near impossible to drive in the rain. It was silly, but it was my first car and you learn from these types of terrible decisions.

Put the air intake where it belongs, nice and high.

Same here. It was far from my first car, and I didn't put it on (so I guess it's not the same at all). I bought a RSX-S with a CAI on it.
I never had an issue with it, and it did make a fun noise at the VTEC crossover point, but I had no desire to put one any subsequent vehicle I owned. I read many a thread about hydrolock with the exact same CAI I had, so I took appropriate precautions.
The guy who had the car after me grenaded the gearbox, but that's another story.
What I'm shocked about is the fact that the insurance company in the case of the Genesis actually paid the claim. Want to know why your rates are high when you're young even if your record is clean? Guys like that.

I would've thought the insurance would've rejected the claim due to his modifications

All you need is one of these. I think it's less than $50...

He also could of put a 20$ Injen Hydroshield filter on it and .. you know.. his fender liner back on.. but.. thats too easy.
What kind of CAI did he put on it? (out of curiosity)

Another thing that I don't understand is when people replace a perfectly good factory cold-air intake and airbox with an intake in the engine bay.
My Volvo 850 is a case in point – 850s have a generously-sized air intake that draws from the front grille, with a large filter area, but you still see people chopping all that out for a pod filter in the engine bay that's going to draw in much warmer air. I understand that some cars have poorly-designed intakes that could benefit from better breathing, but that doesn't seem to be one of them.

A popular mod for the Pontiac Grand Prix back in the day was to use a rubber coupler, PVC, and a cone filter. The filter always ended up very close to the exhaust crossover.

I remember all the idiots that were told in 99 or so, dont lower your vr6 GTI and ended up with cracked oil pans.

There was once a huge argument on gencoupé.com. huge argument over CAI over SRI. People who live in rainy watery areas should avoid cold air intakes. Isnt really worth it for the small amount of HP gain compared to the risk of hydro lock. Hell the cold air is just going to get super heated by the turbo, then go through the inter cooler. Not worth it at all. Maybe just to show off to the bros.

One of the first things I do on my cars is to find out where the air intake is. On my Subaru, it's right above the right-hand headlight.
On my Jeep XJ, it was right above the left-hand turn signal. I have no idea what the folks who put cone filters on XJs are thinking. The 4.0 straight six is not a high-performance engine, and you've just reduced the fording height by a lot. I think my favorite intake mod for the XJ is this: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/my-a…

I'm quite happy for people like that. I have 15,000 miles on my Mazdaspeed 6's engine (with 85k on the chassis) because of an Injen cold-air intake. You wouldn't think it wouldn't matter in Phoenix, but the streets flood quite readily under heavy rain (like the past few weeks).
