Welcome to Tie-lopnik, where I tie my tie a certain way and then tell you about it! Here is my go-to knot, a slight variation of the Shelby knot, also known as the Pratt knot.
Advantages: tight, firm, compact, rare, almost symmetrical
Disadvantages: you may receive a distracting amount of attention from women

that dimple... Well done. I'm a single winsor fan myself, double/full is a more formal setting

I also use the Pratt knot. So easy yet so much better looking than the four-in-hand everyone else that works here uses.

I have no idea how to tie a tie. My gf always does it and I've never learned lol

For ties I am a fan of the The Tie Bar , especially mine (that they dont seem to sell anymore) with playing cards, cigars and martini glasses on it

Dude, you can find incredibly nice brand name ties for like 20-30 dollars if you look in the right places.

I've tried thrifting around my area once before, but all the good stuff is usually already gone or there is a lack of menswear.
So where do you suggest I start looking?

There's something to be said about having a "good tie day." I consider it the male equivalent of the fabled good hair day. Things that help the good tie day include perfect length, perfect symmetry (when called for), perfect dimples. All good.
A good bowtie day is even better.

If you are the type of guy that wears bowties often enough to have "good bowtie days" I assume you have, in general, very good days.

It's not an incredibly frequent event, but, I've been known to wear them to the office.

^^^^^^^^ Double Windsor dood right here when I have to wear a tie, which is more often than not... Gotta love the symmetry and if you break in your tie right, you can get a very nice triangle formed consistently with a dimple coming out the bottom. I have a long torso, so I have to buy long ties which are difficult to find on super sale. :-/
P.S. You should tag these posts so we can find them again...

the four-in-hand should be banned from the world - relegated to the world of clip-ons.

Especially since the Pratt only takes one more step than the four-in-hand. There's no reason not to do it.

I served my mandatory military service when our military still used an "on leave" outfit that did include a tie. That didn't mean a tie on your neck but a properly tied tie. You weren't allowed to leave unless the tie was properly tied.
That gap/hole hanging under the knot wouldn't have be allowed in a properly tied tie. There were couple of terms terms describing such failure and they were both describing the genitals of certain mammals.
I'm still pretty strict in my tie quality control.

That gap/hole is called a dimple, and it is there on purpose. Tying without a dimple is easy.

I couldn't still accept such. It just looks so faulty.

Well, a center dimple is standard here.

So how does that vary from the Double Windsor? The pleat in the middle? Can't you achieve the same effect with a DW, or is this just a modification of the DW?
macanamera

This is a different knot than the DW. The dimple in the middle can be put in any tie, I like to include a dimple but some people don't, so I tied the DW without it. The DW is a bigger not than the Shelby, and more triangular with a wide top and narrow base.
