I picked up this project about a month ago and so far it's been great. This car came from Vancouver Island so it was virtually rust free other than this nasty scrape on the passenger side rear fender where my stepmom(previous owner) scraped it against a concrete barrier.
*Before we go any further please forgive the potato pics I forgot to bring my camera with me.*
Other than the above mentioned scrape there was only two very small rust spots as you will see below.
One just above the driver side headlight caused by a stone chip
and another just below the rear hatch (there is a small dent there so something must of been dropped on it)
I grabbed the wire wheel we had at work to clean out the hard to reach spots inside the dents.
after that I started sanding to scuff up the surface so the paint can stick.
Please note that my only intention at this time was to prevent further rust, I did not bother doing any type of bodywork to make it look pretty. I plan on respraying the car in the spring and I will take care of it then.
Masked and ready to go.
This is the paint I was talking to you guys about. I sell this thru my work and I can buy it at cost for $5.36/can. This is what I will respray the whole car in the future with.
It's an industrial type paint that does not require any primer, you can spray it directly on bare metal.
So here we go with the painting. I started out with very light coats and waited 30mins in between each coat.
the below pics are after the second coat, the paint is almost a perfect match.
it's starting to look good isn't it?
The stone chip on the hood is barely noticeable other than the dent.
After 4 light coats this is the end result.

I'm pretty pleased with the results. Now at least your eyes are not automatically drawn to the scrape on the side. If your not looking for it odds are you won't even notice it.

I love the series of posts you do on the mazda. What is the end goal of this project?

Thank you!
I'm not quite sure yet? I plan on fixing it up real good and get it 100% mechanically with a rattle can re-spray and then maybe selling it to a student in need or something.
I don't plan on making much money on it I would sell it for essentially what I have invested in it. I would just want it to go to someone that really needs it.
I don't need this car I'm just having a good time working on it. If I sell it I would probably use that money to get another car and start the process all over again.
