Hey Nibby, sorry if it's the wrong place to ask. But have you done a rivet replacement on your Model M? Some of my keys aren't working, and I'm wondering if I should spend hours trying to replace the rivets with bolts.

I have not done so yet! I'd just look at stuff on YouTube for that.

oh wow, you are really close! The year is quite off though!

BTW, I'm hearing some high pitched noise from the CPU area. Is it worth junking?

I'm going to hazard the statement that 1) a pentium 4 and 2) a compaq of that era is certainly not worth the time of day.

It's likely a VRM or coil that's making all that whine, and in my experience, replacing them is far more time consuming than it should be, and sometimes doesn't even work.

holy moly. Pretty much spot on, other than the fact that it's the 'v' version (I don't think you can tell by the motherboard). I've been toying with the idea of making this into a Chromebook, but it doesn't seem like it's going to work anytime soon. Luckily I have quite a few old laptops here and there!

How did you manage to get the exact model? That's amazing!

I'm a lead tech in a repair shop. I've seen a few things, and I have my tricks.

The ChromeOS is a really touchy thing, but I'd look for something a little more modern to put it on. I had the ChromeOS on a Dell Mini 9, and even with an SSD, on occasion it still felt sluggish. I keep it on a flash drive on one my keychains so I can boot off USB into a web only, private "machine" just for me. I have like 7 laptops, trying to pear them down a little. I'm only going to keep one netbook, my MacBook Pros, and my old Thinkpad because it's a workhorse. The Toshiba was my uncle's, so I really don't want to just get rid of it, but the other laptops can go. There's quite a few of them.

I have a first gen ChromeBook (the white samsung, i wish I got the CR-48), and I love it. Great battery life even at 3ish years old, and works really really well. Great OS for just farting around on the internet, and fairly immune to most viruses and malware as well. Perfect for students who don't need specialized applications.

The next laptop I'm going to try out is one with a Core 2 Duo T7500. It's a fair bit bulkier, but in return, there and hdpi screen. It should run ChromeOS pretty well as the processor is near equivalent to today's Celeron.

Now that you mention it, I have a feeling your 'trick' was searching up the part number for the Kingston RAM. Was I right?

Nope. Compaqs and HPs of that era don't put a parts label on the RAM that's specific to the machine. Today, plenty of HPs and today use a parts number, but unless it's the motherboard, it's not very specific to the machine. They use it to source replacement parts from the warehouse, and is this 6 digit number, almost always followed by -001. Not sure why, but that's how it is.

No, but you're close with the RAM though, because I can tell that it's DDR, and that was P4 era stuff right there. That ultrabay design and layout also tips it off as a compaq/HP design. I almost thought it was a Thinkpad, but they're pretty unique in design, and are usually an obvious answer when you see them.

The Core 2 should do a lot better with the ChromeOS than a P4, by leaps and bounds.
