Friend of mine is in the market for a new used car. Requirements/desires are as follows:
-Wagon(possibly small suv)
-Leather
-Under $6000
-Reliable
and really, as new as possible. No 240s or old mercedes diesel wagons or something. This is gonna be a family hauler vehicle.
I was thinking a Legacy/Outback wagon or a Volvo 7xx/8xx/9xx wagon. Thoughts? How's reliability on a early 2000s volvo wagon?

Dodge Magnum SXT could easily fit that bill. Incredibly reliable cars, in that price range, with leather front and back.
The 240's and especially the Mercedes diesel wagons are especially reliable, I don't see why they're being discounted. They just keep on going, and have a really great look to them.
Legacy and Outback wagons are pretty good, but I'd look for a Volvo V7x wagon or the 7xx/9xx series.
Passat/Jetta wagons are a good choice as well, provided they're well kept. A neglected VW is probably the worse thing for anyone's wallet.

A reliable wagon with leather interior under $6000?
The answer is always B-body - specifically, the 1991-1996 Buick Roadmaster wagon.
Leather seats? It's a Buick. Reliable? It's a small block Chevy and a 700R4 on (basically) a half-ton truck chassis - it will run until the heat death of the universe. Under $6k? If you know how to shop.
This is a white '91 wagon with the 305/5.0L and 92,000 miles for $1800.
This is a burgundy '95 wagon with the LT1 350 and 98,000 miles for $3995 buy-it-now.
This is a Goddamn pristine blue '93 wagon with the L05 350 and 94,600 miles for $6995 or best offer.
sm70- why not Duesenberg?

Volvo & Subaru are both good choices. He also might look at a late 90's Accord/Camry wagon, if it doesn't have to be less than 10 years old.

agreed on the neglected VW part. My wife's B6 Passat has been sitting for two weeks waiting on the extended warranty people to approve the labor needed to find out what electrical bug has been killing the battery.

BMW 528/530. 230hp or thereabouts from an inline 6. Comfy yet still sporting ride quality. Can be found with a manual even in the US. Easy to work on when something goes south (which will likely be a water pump, so check when that repair was done last). Tons of aftermarket upgrades available if that interests you.
Good luck.

If the friend was me, that would be what I'd get. However, it's not. He needs a car to haul gear and his family around. Would not want a manual transmission. And will not be modifying the car.

Have you done the ball joints yet? All 16 of them? (in front).
