I'm pretty sure this hurts some type of privacy...

So I've been looking (yet again) at costs and methods for importing stuff to Brazil, car parts in this case, because of that project to upgrade my Tipo I talked about earlier, and it turns out doing this is about to become (even more) absurdly expensive, not too mean probably illegal, thanks to a new super system the customs office is working on. When this new system is up and running, the government will know exactly where you travel to, what shops you visit, what you buy and how you plan on bringing it into the country. They'll also know exactly how many suitcases you'll have left with, what was on said suitcases, and how many you're bringing back. Also, they're implementing a face recognition software to make sure you're... well, you, and not someone passing as you for... I don't know, smuggling an iPhone? An iPod? Do people still buy iPods?. They'll keep a history of everything you ever bought overseas to determine what you're most likely to buy when you go out again, as well as how much you usually spend, so they can skip actually inspecting your luggage and go straight to taxing you the same amounts they've taxed you the last time, because you're probably trying to smuggle stuff into the country.

Now, I know this sounds like I'm just whining over random crap again, but at this point I just don't care anymore, I just thought this whole thing was absurd. Beyond absurd, even, it would be absurd if Brazil was a hot spot for terrorist activity or something like that, but it isn't. Also, the government is constantly bitching about lacking the resources needed to curb organized crime or maintain public security, but for keeping tabs on everyone that isn't comitting crimes at all times, they're apparently perfectly equipped! I believe this has something to do with the fact that, with the return of inflation and prices for everything going up, more people are both leaving (or fleeing) the country and buying better stuff for the same price overseas, and the government wants to curb that. That's totally a bigger issue than organized crime...

Welcome to America circa 2003. Do you have pat-downs, scanners, wiretaps, "no fly" lists, and unprovoked cavity searches yet?

Trust me, you guys have it way easier up there. The amount of things you just plain can't do in Brazil is mind numbing. Like I said, a system like this would already be absurd in a country that's a hot spot for terrorist activity, but in a place like Brazil, ridden with every social problem that's NOT terrorism, this is beyond absurd. They're not doing this out of paranoia for the "security of the nation", they're doing this to fill their pockets.

Yeah, I know. Just wanted to shoulder some of the pain of a lack of privacy.

It really is a pain in the ass... Down here, from the moment you're born until you die, you're stuck with two sets of numbers in order to prove that you are who you say you are, and you have to include those numbers, plus a helping of other documents, in everything! You can't even go to the supermarket anymore without your ID number, CPF number, Voters registry number, military discharge number, driver's license number.....
