What is a 2500lb rwd turbo rotary coupe from the 80s?
I never see anyone talk about these cars, about importing them. It's always Nissans or Toyotas that people want to import. Meanwhile this car exists. In stock form it has 160hp and is 2500 lbs. 2500. That is RIDICULOUSLY light for a car of this type. Did you also know they could have awesome 80s interiors?
That they look extremely weird?
People need to start saving these from Japan and importing them. Buy one for a HPDE car, buy one for "look at my weird car" shows. Just buy one.
Heres a carspotter in Japan taking a look at one:
Oh and guess what? The chassis is shared with the Mazda 929 which was sold here. So some junkyard parts will fit it.
Don't want a rotary? Well they were also available with Mazda 4 cylinder and Diesel engines. The 4 cylinder is of the Mazda FE kind of which there are DOHC and turbo versions. Could the F2T bolt in? Possibly. Don't know, but it is an F series engine.
So it's super light like a FB RX7 but has a streering rack, turbo, has luxury options, and was the fastest car in Japan for a time as well. Yes..... I will consider one in the future.

I now need this seat. Being able to lean back AND have the seat adjusted so that it can support my neck, perfect. Why doesn't anyone do this?

If they were more common I'd be off the the junkyard to get one of these seats for my car. Certainly an interesting car overall, hadn't heard of them til now.

Drove one of these back in the 80s. I recall silly levels of power and steering that felt a bit loose. Still, a lot of fun.

It's been a long time since I actually learned about a new car from a post on here. Neat.

This was my personal car when I lived in Japan in the 1980s. It was the fastest car made in Japan the year it was built (1982). It is highly advanced in many respects for the year it was built - all the Nissans and Toyota s at that time looked dull/same/boxy like trucks (and handled much that way too). I brought it back to the US in 1986, did all my DOTs and EPAs and still have it today. Back then the term JDM didn’t even exist... just like most westerners - with the outstanding exception of the Australians - didn’t even know this fantastic car existed.
The only
other one was brought in by Ford, as M
azda’s major shareholder at the time, for testing and reverse engineering. But that’s another story.
