I would also take the 4GC over the 3GT.
But the 3GT, by virtue of being based on the Chinese-market long-wheelbase 3-series, has a ton more room inside. More rear legroom than a 5-series.

I'm 100% with you . Somehow that comment didn't make it onto the AOTD post that proceeded it. Perkins was smoking crack that day, I suppose.

Get a 4er GC then. I actually like this better than the standard 3 sedan.

One of the ugliest hatchbacks your eyes have the misfortune of dealing with.

It isn't as bad as the 5GT or the X4 and X6... but still vomit-inducing.

The Saturn? No, that's fine. A lot of people like Saturns.

I wish they made an M4GC. That would be the shit.

That would possibly be the real M3. Unfortunately, it'd be the most expensive model.

In a very loose sense of the word "hatchback", yes.

the GT lettering always looks fake to me. The first time I saw one I thought someone was giving their car more street cred by slapping GT on there. Pretty sure it's a different font from the rest of the lettering too

It has a rear door that swings upwards to allow access to the cargo area. It is by definition a hatchback; what is wrong with it?

no, it is a hatchback. Hatchbacks are great utilitartian cars. some people on jalopnik hate it because BMW has lost their way. Which is true, BMW is no longer a drivers car company like it used to, but the cars they make now are "different" think like apple being different with iphones and imacs.

I love it, actually. One of the few crossovers that I actually like. We had a 2009 one before this one, same generation. It isn't fast, but it isn't necessarily slow either. It handles surprisingly decent for a crossover and it has high ground clearance. It's been most excellent in bad weather, including Hurricanes Irene and Sandy... blizzards, ice, you name it, it has never gotten stuck.
It's roomy inside and comfortable, albeit not very quiet. It isn't noisy enough to bother you though. This one has a 4 speed auto (lol in 2011) but it still gets me 23-30 mpg.
The speakers however... they're average at best. Not very good.
For $25k, you get heated cloth seats, aux + usb ports, cruise, power windows doors, etc. and a hugeass sunroof. I recommend it to, well, anyone.
I would gladly take a new Forester over even the most luxurious crossovers.

While I'm not a fanboy, I'm certainly not a BMW nostalgic/hater like most people here.
I like what BMW is doing and I don't believe they should be forced to have a 3 model lineup.
There's a lot of double standards here when it comes to BMW.

I think many automakers are making too many crossovers or ... whatever you classify these GT things as.

what you are calling crossovers are just variants of existing cars, it's not like they were focusing elsewhere than on their car lineup. BMW is a much larger company than it was 30 years ago, their engineering and manufacturing capabilities allow them to do that. They have a very competent car lineup and they're just leveraging these platforms. I really don't see where the problem is.
