The W210 E55 AMG sedan is a supremely capable people hauler, but what about the guy with 5 kids or 3 kids and a few dogs? Sure, you could step up to the R63 AMG, but the W251 platform cars are expensive and suffer from the reliability/brand-whoring of the Daimler-Chrysler era...but it would be better to just find the elusive E55 AMG wagon.
What is a Narwhal? A big, fat, whale with a single tusk that looks like a unicorn horn...which is a pretty good description for the E55 wagon. The longroof version of the W210 platform is indeed a sight to behold. The AMG version adds some road hugging ground effects, AMG monoblock wheels, and a few badges out back. Even with yellowed headlights (that could be polished up with a little plasticX in a matter of minutes) this thing just looks mean and out of place. It stands out in the school parking lot like a pro MMA fighter picking up her twins. At first glance it looks like it could be a typical model, but it moves like predator and nothing jiggles when you hit a speed bump.
Under the hood is the M113, a 5.5 liter V8 rated at 354 horsepower and 391 ft-lbs of torque. Mercedes only offered the AMG version with a 5-speed automatic gearbox, but think of the E55 as a reboot of the classic muscle car formula, not some kind of corner carver.
The inside of this wagon looks in decent shape, but the leather shows some sign of the 109k miles on the odometer, but even nice leather starts to show wrinkles/cracks in a few years. It is a shame that Mercedes stopped using the MBTex material they used in earlier cars because that stuff was impervious to wear.
