These things are all over CL for something like $3500 and I've always been tempted to buy one. Then I think about what it would be like on the sheet ice in a few months....

This version was actually all T Top'd, but there were some convertible conversions.

They were the second worst Z ever made. Terrible engine.

Those are kind of cool in great shape but I'll keep my 240z. I'd like to try it out though.

Take it from a Z guy: get a 280Z or 280ZX instead

I always thought those were the worst Z-cars. If they're not then what was?

280ZX was the worst, tied with Z31

Trucks are the dirty perverts of the car world though, so they can pull them off.

They weighed 3000lbs and the turbo models made 220HP.
Throw in a euro/Nismo cam (or any other aftermarket cam) and they're rated at 250HP. Non intercooled.
Decent gas, different wastegate, and an intercooler and you can make 270HP reliably on the stock turbo for under $2000. That's a power-to-weight of an early 2000s Mustang Cobra (regular, not the R) but with one of the best handling chassis built in the 80s. They are highly underrated vehicles.
That being said, pick one up now, garage it for the winter to clean it and repair minor things, and then drive it in the spring. Sell it in the summer when it's above market and you have time to clean it up, and you'll probably make money off of it. You don't want to drive it in the winter if only because it will start to rust, especially if they salt your roads.

Underrated engine. Not as good as the Z32, but still dirt cheap to make a quick 300HP and easier to work on. They have their place.

Let me assure you, no VG is easy to make cheap power out of haha.

Problem is, I'm just a college student, so whatever car I have needs to be my DD year round. Well, that and the only garage space I have access to is occupied by dad's Altima in the winter.

Driving across the Bay Bridge about 4 mos ago, I saw a new 911 (could have been a 997, but it was fairly new) with a bumpersticker on the paint ...didn't even have the decency to put it on the glass; had it right there on the goddamn paint. Tacky bastard...

I've owned 2 Z cars - a 1980 280 and a 1986 300 - both with T Tops. They are a pain in the ass to deal with, but they do provide a nice driving experience...
