I can post this here without fear of backlash from the "Why is there x in my y ?" group. Windows Phone Developer Preview users - check your phones. Cyan is being released to a "large group" of users. There's also an update to 8.1.1 to increase performance and do some other neat things. Update yr phones!

Just switched over from years of iPhones to a Lumia 1520, it's been refreshing so far minus the issues with broken & janky apps. I'll have to see if I'm up to date.

I nearly bought a 1520 but it doesn't fit in my hands. Or pockets. Gonna hold out for the new phones (hopefully) coming Q1 2015.
On the 1520 you should be about as up to date as possible. Even without dev preview, you should be running Cyan firmware and 8.1. 8.1.1 should be rolling out shortly, and you should be the first one to get the Denim firmware (you bastrid)

Still getting used to the changes on mobile. Damn thing fired off my reply too fast. I wanted to hold off for the 1525 but I got a sweet deal for my 5s and 1520 so I couldn't pass it up. Plus I'm not sure if it'll turn to vaporware now that Microsoft is phasing out Nokia.

Is it worth upgrading right now? I don't know if I should considering I might be getting a 1520 soon.

Quick, simple, efficient.
Big sell is the tiled front page; basically, you should easily be able to organize everything you need to use on your phone on a regular basis on the front page of icons. Live tiles will show you the pertinent data from an app without having to open the app itself (weather is the plainest example). I found the email integration to be easier than on my iPhones.
App library is a bit of a drawback, but these days just about all of the big/brand name apps are out there for banking, social media, streaming music. You'll miss out on some toys from time to time (or they'll be janky, underdeveloped versions), but the app library argument is really losing steam and should continue to lose steam with the fact that Windows 8 apps will (hopefully) be able to run on the phones without any further modification by the publisher.
Advantage over iOS is that it's much more intuitively laid out (my opinion, of course; iOS users will bitch about it upon first use, but that's because they've grown accustomed to iOS, not because it's inherently intuitive) and a much cleaner interface. Your phone also won't get slower with each additional update (my biggest gripe with iOS; you're forced to updated to continue using the phone properly, but after a few updates your hardware is incapable of running the OS at proper speeds). Downside is app library, basically.
Advantage over Android is that you don't have to spend a buttload of time messing with it to get it like you want it; part of that is that it simply has less ability for customization, but part of it is that it simply works better right out of the box. Downside is again app library, and if you're into customs ROMs and all of that then you're going to be disappointed.
TLDR: attractive, intuitive interface; will continue to run the updated OS throughout the life of the phone without slowing down; app library is good enough.

How is third party tile support compared to Apps? Android Widgets sort of work like that, but they're not standardized and very few third party widgets are really available.
What about the settings? Are there "godmode" menus that let you see pretty much all the information you need (Android's setting page is this), or is it a complicated tree to find what you want to change?

Any application has the ability to provide a live tile. Whether the publisher does or not, that's a different story. With 8.1 came a neat feature where tiles can be transparent, allowing you to have a background picture that shows through the tiles. It's p neat :). The best part about them is, due to the WP interface, the tiles will look (mostly) the same. Leads to a very clean and simple experience.
There's not much for godmode. They recently allowed you to see file structure (but not really needed here). There's an about the phone page, an extras+info page that shows firmware revisions, datasense and storagesense which go into great detail. Otherwise, it's just a phone lol

Got a lot better with the last substantial update for 7, and it's supposed to be pretty widespread on 8 (I'm not on 8 yet; killed a phone, iOSing an old phone until the next wave of phones comes out in Q1 2015)
I like the settings setup: there is a setting tab within every screen, there's an overall settings page, and then there is application settings page. My only real complaint here is that that system settings aren't super intuitively laid out (no real rhyme or reason behind it). The good news is that there are live tiles to take you straight to the most often used system settings (like one that's combined for wifi/airplane mode/bluetooth)

I do love it. Had iPhones (original through 4s), Androids (too many to count - did roots, built roms, etc etc etc) and when I grabbed a WP7 phone for the wife, I became instantly jealous. Switched myself a year later and could not be happier! I spend less time on my phone and more time with real people lol

The OS update is really to fix the storage check bug (previous updates would fail because it didn't think there was enough space) and to fix the 8008135 (or whatever it was) error on HTC phones.

When designing Windows 2000 and XP, from what I remember, the methods used were to measure the time to do common tasks, and make the computer able to do them in as few clicks and time possible. Do you get that feeling in the
File structure is actually a huge thing for me, since I like using my phone as portable hard drive for file storage. I was pissed when Android stopped letting you access the file storage without rooting your phone.
I might consider Windows for my next phone. I've been waiting for them to either give up on Windows Phone, or revise it significantly, because I am a pretty huge Microsoft fanboy.

Everything is right freakin' there. The new notification center in 8.1 is very nice, with one-tap access to most things you'll need. I've now got nice looking folders on my home screen and rarely ever go into the app menu. Settings are intuitive and, unsurprisingly, are exactly where you expect them to be.
File storage? Pff, remember this is a Windows device. That functionality is enabled OOB. I probably have more non-phone files on my phone than phone files.
Huge revision underway. Expect reveals shortly, to coincide with Threshold and the new XBone OS too.

No worries, I was being sarcastic. I am tired of the standard trope of hating on MS, and especially WP, but I won't argue that the user base is incredibly small.
At this point Android is so big only because it's so big. WP is a true competitor, minus some very specific apps - some of which Google will not allow to work because they know people would switch if they had those apps (Youtube does not work well on WP because Google does not want it to. They also will not allow their Google-verse apps to work on other platforms.) People keep buying Android phones because they have enormous screens, or they are basically free and they learn to deal with the OS.
I deal with the public and their devices in relation to cars, and nearly everyone with an Android is either scared of it, or utterly clueless how to actually use it. Sadly the lack of a specific 3rd party app keeps WP from working with our cars like iOS/Android otherwise I would tell people to switch. WP is just that much easier to use.

I would not be surprised if T-Mobile was waiting for the Denim firmware to come out so that they can combine it with Cyan. But post-Denim updates will all be done directly through MS, right? So no more separate OS updates and firmware updates? Hopefully that's the case...
*I just remembered Samsung and HTC...

I'm not sure how they're going to treat FW updates in the future. With Lumias being their model line, yet FW-based functionality being wanted on other phones (take "Hey Cortana!" on the HTC One M8 for Windows), I'm having a hard time figuring that one out.

Pretty much this. I've been using Windows Phone since its inception (on a Samsung Omnia 7) and it's been absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately, because T-Mobile/Orange UK decided to not let Omnia 7s update to WP 7.8, I'm still stuck on 7.5.
I plan on grabbing that Lumia 830 as soon as it becomes available though. I love the interface, it's simply amazing for phones.
