E39 M5's are nice cars to drive :)

How's the gas mileage and range on these things when it comes to highway cruising?
I've always thought that when it comes time to have a nice exec sedan of sorts, instead of a new mid-spec E class, 5 series, Hyundai Sonata! or whatever, I'd much rather buy a pristine low mileage E39 M5 and save up the rest for the inevitable repairs. Should probably get on that quickly before these things get uber rare and prices start shooting up.

I hadn't really done much driving in them until this road rally and after words I was completely sold on it. I love the engine, the size, the sound, it's great.
Actually got very good mileage, we were driving very very aggressively and it's fairly modified so we were not getting the best MPG's, but driving moderately with stock drivetrain would get you maybe up to 25 highway if you are careful and 15 city.
This M5 has an aggressive tune, intake, exhaust, cams, and a Dinan rear end which is a little shorter than the stock one.

Sounds like a blast....and that mileage is better than what I get in my LGT (E30s2k drives a Subaru too!) - I average about 22-24mpg with mostly highway driving.
Completely agree on the points about the E39 M5. Right now to just tool around in it's too big a car...but once I'm finally "grown up" I can totally see it being the perfect combination of comfort, size, power, and handling.

It eats highway like it was built for it... Wait it was built to eat up the autobahn haha. The engine loves to be at 3,000RPM and cruise at 90+MPH. It felt so planted at 140mph, literally felt like we were going 90.

I wish I could say this from experience.
