Curious if it really will be as good as 30 years ago.

And it will be available with the bi-color paint job of the concept. Though they got rid of the French flag on the front bumper :/

The looks don't impress me the way the 205 GTi always has but current law/safety prevent that any way (and I'm getting old). Just very curious if it will get that big a grin on my face like the 205 did. Tough job!

I'm curious what they are changing for the 30th anniversary edition. I am lucky enough to have driven both a 205 GTI 1.9 in good nick this summer, and the 208 GTI when it was new last year. The two are of course incomparable, a lot has changed in the last 30 years, but i'm of the impression, the 208 GTI is an excellent hot hatchback, just in a different way than the 205 was.
The 205, without PAS is like the car being wired into your nervous system, you are simply one with the car. This sort of connected feeling isn't present in any car today, let alone one made to a budget, like the 208 GTI was - NVH and safety regulations to blame. On a winding road, the one you would want to drive it on, the 205 is fast even by 2014 standards. However, even though the 208 is much less raw, i would even call it: sophisticated, GT-ish, it is mind-blowingly fast too. You can easily get it up to, and maintain even on challenging roads, speeds that will break your neck, airbags notwithstanding. It does feel effortless to go fast in it, but then things start happening so fast, you do get the adrenaline kick, and the racecar feeling you wanted. It is a hot hatchback, as it is:
- based on a hatchback, and can be used as one
- isn't expensive to what it knows
- is very very fast
- so fast, that you can easily die in one. Like you could in a 205.
So all in all, i would call the 208 GTI a worthy successor, one that is very different, but just as good.

Good write-up, thanks. The fact I won't DD it anyway will probably end up in me getting that 205. And I better be quick as these are increasing in value rapidly.

Hahaha... Everything around or in a Peugeot will explode. Eventually!

Differences? The 30th packs 208hp and 300Nm of torque (vs 200hp and 275Nm). It's also lowered (10 mm), a larger stance (10 and 16mm, front and rear), new brakes by Brembo, new tires by Michelin.
And the engine is now Euro6 instead of Euro5.

That don't sound much on the power front, but i am honestly surprised they saw a need to lower and widen the track. This might just push it hardcore enough to get a bit closer to the original, who knows? Lifting inside-back wheels in corners maybe? We'll see.

Come to think of it, in the original commercial, the parachutes explode after an F20 Tigershark fires some AIM-7 Sparrow. Not sure if that radar will target a chute but hey. The 205 avoiding parachuted rockets (around 0:51 you can see the chute tied to the rocket?) by that Hercules and evading a Hughes MH-6 by getting of a ski-ramp will certainly make your day.
