Hey guys,

So I've had my brand new 2014 Versa Note for just under a month now. After a few days of ownership I noticed that the rear bumper clearly doesn't match, but I figured it was just because it is plastic and the body is metal. However, after observing it in many different lights, showing pictures to friends, family, and the Nissan Versa forums, we are all universally agreeing that the bumper has been sprayed/resprayed the wrong paint code. Not only does it not quite fit properly on one side, but it doesn't have the same luster/flake/shade as every other part of the car, including the plastic front bumper.

My question is, how do I approach the dealer? Will they automatically assume I've crashed it and the repair was botched (with less than 500 miles...)? Do I talk to my original salesman or the service department first?

I am really upset, mainly because I had a really positive experience actually buying the car.

Ask the service manager at the dealership for the name and number of the zone rep. You want someone who isn't involved with the dealership to look at it. There are also people you can hire who will independently inspect the car and determine if its been in an accident. I had to hire one once when I suspected a new car I'd bought had been hit.

I assume that they did not disclose to you that your new car had received any body repairs? If they are a quality dealership they will repair it for you and bill it to Nissan. Nissan should have no issues covering it. Back when I worked at a Mazda dealership, a customer's CX-5 had many paint chips in the rear from transport. Mazda offered to pay to have the entire rear-end repainted. We ended up dealer-trading for a BRAND NEW CX-5. If your dealer is dedicated to excellence they should at least offer to re-finish the issue.

No, it was nothing was disclosed. However, I received great customer service throughout the buying process & afterwards so I am hoping walking in there with a level head and a non threatening attitude will hopefully resolve the issue. I don't want anything but a resprayed bumper that actually fits on both sides of the car.

Go to the dealer and explain the situation. For warranty work, they generally have a strong incentive to help you.

It sounds like what happened with your car is the wrong rear fascia was installed at the assembly plant. The fascias come from a supplier pre-painted and arrive on the line sequenced - packaged in the same order as the cars coming down the line. It is not uncommon for the sequencing to get messed up, and usually the error is caught. However, with similar colors, the cars can make it out of the plant mismatched. Stranger things have happened.

The dealer will want to help you with this - it is a silly error on the part of the OEM, and the dealer gets reimbursed 100% for fixing it. To them it is a free opportunity to build customer goodwill, and difficult for the OEM to charge back (low risk).

Thanks, that is reassuring. I am thinking that my bumper got painted Fresh Powder, which is Versa sedan exclusive, instead of Aspen White, which is hatchback exclusive. Doesn't really explain why it doesn't fit right on the driver's side, but that may just be quality control because these are cheap cars.

It may have been built that way. When I was at a Ford dealership there was a F150 that had three gloss black gender garnishes and one plastic grey one. Rolled off the assembly line that way.

It isn't officially a pearl, it's called "Aspen White", but there is some pearl effect to it.

I would only go there if they refused to take care of it the easy way.

In my experience, it's deny, deny, deny with dealers.

Was it sold like that, did the customer ever complain?

Make your concerns known to the dealership. First off, let them know that this is not an issue caused by yourself. That will be a first cop-out. Second, be kind and composed. I am sure the dealership will remedy the situation.

a neighbor of mine has a new rogue, darkish grey metallic. their rear bumper seems a shade darker, especially when you stare at it in direct sunlight. i think it might just be a nissan thing, go to some other nissan dealers and look at cars on a sunny day. i think its just a quality control issue.

another thing- the bumper covers are black before they are painted. maybe the robots arent spraying enough neutral colored primer or something? i wouldnt worry about it, and if they resprayed it might end up looking worse, or end up eventually peeling.
