So, as some of you may know I am trying to sell my Jeep. Well, I just got a call from my mom to tell me my neighbor hit it this morning. Yup. She hit it. Apparently pretty hard. She hit a fucking parked car.

She drives a Honda, and lives two houses down from me. In less than two house lengths, she managed to accelerate fast enough that her bumper was nearly completely ripped off, my Jeep was moved 3 to 4 feet into the road from where it was, and her daughter hit her face on the seat in front of her hard enough to give her a badly bloody nose even though she was wearing her seatbelt.

If you're going to peel out of your driveway like an idiot, at least have the decency to do it when your kid isn't in the car...

I haven't seen pictures of the damage yet, but I am livid. She said she apparently didn't see the car because the sun was in her eyes. Okay, fine. We live on a big hill and sometimes the sun is bright, but one of my family's cars is parked in that spot (on the road directly in front of my house) 90% of the time. There is nearly always a car there. More than half of the houses on my road have cars parked on the street, including hers, so assuming that the entire road is open something no one has ever done on my street. The kicker? Her boyfriend was actually mad at my mom for calling the police and making him miss his train. Up yours, dude. I hope someone hits your riced out Subaru (it's not tasteful, trust me) when it's parked on the street. Get mad about it then.

Just my fucking luck that my car gets in an accident when I'm not even in the same state, and while I'm trying to fucking sell it. There goes my clean fucking Carfax. There does my asking price. There goes the rest of my goddamn day.

I AM SO AGGRAVATED RIGHT NOW

That fucking sucks. Take lots of pictures of the damage so you can show potential buyers. I bet she was yelling at her kid or something and not watching the road.

WOW that sucks.

if you end up sueing, you should consider the lost money in the selling transaction and how much THAT has devalued your car.

Is her insurance not going to pay for the value of the Jeep before the wreck?

I don't know if it's totalled yet, but it doesn't sound like its a write off. as far as I know her insuremce is going to cover the repairs but then I'm still stuck trying to sell a car that now has been in an accident. Honestly, it might be better if its totalled.

Ok, I didn't read all of it and got as far as "pushed your jeep 3-4 feet" when I couldn't help but let the science part of my brain take over and I ran some numbers...

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Your Jeep (mass): 3500 lbs (1591 kg)

Neighbor's Honda: 3000 lbs (1364 kg)

Coefficient of friction on the ground: 0.7 (not unreasonable but it could be as high as 0.9)

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

So you said your Jeep was moved 3-4 feet (we'll say 1 meter for simplicity's sake) from the original location. That means that the Honda had to do 10,925 Nm of work on your Jeep to move it that far. (1591 kg * 9.81 m/s^2 * 0.7 * 1 m = 10 925 Nm) That work got there by converting the kinetic energy of the Honda into work and moving your Jeep.

Kinetic energy is determined by the formula KE = 0.5*m*v^2 so we have this: 10 925 Nm = 0.5 * 1364 kg * v^2 and solving for v gives us around 4 m/s which is a little less than 9 mph.

These calculations are of course discounting heat loss when this happens and that 9 mph is likely a minimum since it precludes her having hit the brakes at all and most of my assumptions are pretty conservative.

This is the sort of thing I like to do when I don't have anything better. To do.

Your 0.7 would be for static friction of the tire to the road when rolling. For stationary tires (in park, in gear, or e-brake on) would be initially higher, then lower once moving.

But it's probably less overall, especially if she wasn't even off the gas pedal when she hit (said the sun was in her eyes)

That's the plan. Unfortunately I have absolutely no control over this, which makes it way more frustrating. My parents are essentially in charge of this shit show now since I'm at school, so hopefully they would take as many pictures as I would and go about this in a similar fashion. Knowing my mom, I think it'll be well documented. It's still anxiety provoking.

I was actually thinking about that earlier. I am not a sue-happy person, but there is the potential for a good chunk of money to be lost on my end, even after her issuance pays for physical damages. I'm not sure how much this will devalue my car, but I'm sure it'll be significant.

This is equally confusing to me as it is interesting. Physics (and math in general) are far from my strong suits. Is that 9mph how fast she was likely going or something else?

It also could be important for this equation to note that I live on a pretty significant hill. From what I've been told it sounds like, while the Jeep mostly moved out into the road, it was apparently also move up the hill.

post pics as soon as you get a chance..
how old was the jeep? if its newer then 05, then its going to drop the price quite a bit.

It's a 2010 so the price drop is probably going to be significant. I talked to my parents again, and it seems to them like she mostly hit the front bumper and caught a bit of the painted fender. I'm hoping everything behind the bumper and underneath is still straight... I will post pictures as soon as they're sent to me.

Today has been one big:

dam....

say it caused by off-roading, that way when the seller comes by, you dont look like a wimp who only bought a jeep to go mall-crawling

It's been offloading a few times, though gently. I was pretty sure that was how any damage would take place, but boy was I wrong. This is the second incident. The first happened at a shop when someone backed into the fender. It was only paintwork, luckily, and they did it for free, but I still find it weird that a number of Jeep trails left it unscathed, yet a shop that was doing maintenance and my neighbor managed to fuck it up.

The 9 is at the moment of impact which is still a decent clip. Calculating the speed if she was braking is a little more complex but it was about 12 mph which is borderline for setting the airbags off.

The work done is force times distance. If it went uphill, the force would have to be greater and the speed greater as well.

well, the shop was probably thinking: its a jeep, it can take being roughed, its not some super expensive porsche that really fragile or the owner will notice cratches

as for your neighboor, shes just stupid.

Huh. Interesting. The more I look over it, the more sophomore physics (a class I barely scraped by in) begins to come back to me. Very cool.

I actually think it was one of their customers who was picking their car up. It was lower than any of the mechanics' cars and all of their bumpers were free of scuffs/green paint. Oops! That was a quick, free fix. This one is worrying me though. I will keep Oppo informed in the coming days, because I know everyone is SO interested. Ahaha

well, that is assuming ALL of the force get transfered to the jeep. you have to account for the force that was aborbed in the accident VIA beding stuff...so i'm going to say umm, 15mph. (including her hitting the brakes)
