I replied to a post yesterday by Raphael Orlove titled " !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

In the post I mentioned asking my good friend former NASCAR and Indy car race driver Bobby Johns if he still had a desire to get in a car and race, to which he replied, "Every minute I'm alive. But, I'm also old enough now to know I just can't do it without killing myself. And I like breathing."

Well, today, I got this in the mail from Bobby.

If you think "gentleman's racing in old cars" is dangerous today, just look at what racers drove at Indianapolis in the mid-late 1960's, in what was considered state of the art automotive safety engineering at that time.

Nothing but a four stacker and 1" round bar over his head. No cockpit cage. An open face helmet and glass goggles. No gloves.

It's amazing those guys could fit their testicles into the car and still have room to steer.

I always forget how steep the banking is at Indy.

And yeah, the guys were daredevils with big balls back then.

The Fireball Roberts story is still pretty horrifying to me.

Yes it is.

Junior Johnson, Bobby and Fireball fought it out at the Southern 500 once upon a long time ago. There are videos on Youtube.
