Why are there no stepside duallies?

Seriously, it only makes sense. A lot of sense. But I cannot find one example of a dually truck that has steps built into its arches.

I thought you just climbed on the tire and got your stuff, this is wayyyy safer.

I never thought about it, but that's a really good idea! Also, an aftermarket company could make step bars that make a triangle in front of/behind the duals to give the wheel wells more protection. I have seen plenty of trucks with crash rash on the widened fenders...

I suppose it's because the bed is for a fifth wheel or extremely heavy loads that would be impossible to manage over the side rails. I've seen step bars that go out to the arches before.

Yeah, I got the idea when a Silverado missing both fenders (totally illegal, by the way) came by my gas station. Extra protection and added convenience. Can't beat that.

I could be because it would break the lines of the truck, screw with the fuel economy, get filled with water (or snow, or bugs) and therefore be slippery), maybe whistle at high speed...?

True, but it still seems like a logical option for a work truck. Ordinary stepsides have tiny beds, but they still have the same sort of flares as duallies. So it could definitely work if anyone was willing to do it.

I suppose it's possible, but it doesn't seem like there would be many problems that ordinary duallies don't already face.

Other speculation: Maybe it's because they want to sell OEM running boards, and nobody would buy them if there were stock steps?

Also, this way it gives customer the option of having steps or not.

I get what you're saying, but it's not trivial to cut into the dually flares. On step sides they're over the structural portion of the bed and can hold weight. The dually flares are just tacked on so you'd have to run some strength members out there. Additionally the reason they've gotten larger over the years is for aero (old dually flares pretty much stuck straight out) which a cut out step would ruin. Behind the wheels I could maybe see as an option, but I'm not sure there'd be a lot of takers.

Does anyone even make 1/2 ton step sides anymore?

Found one on Google, but they seem to be rarer and rarer.

that's a 3/4 ton truck and its a fleet side not step side. I'm pretty sure no OEMs offer a step side bed from the factory anymore.
