I really must ask- is there actually anyone in the entire world who sees a buggati veyron and thinks "oh yes,that makes me want to buy a volkswagon" ?

I suspect the answer to that is few or none. Please dont get me wrong -i'm not taking a shot at the halo car concept, just the extremely tenuous connection between these two brands.In the average buyers mind anyways.Couldn't VW have got so much more gain from making a Halo car with their own name on it?

I thought Bugatti was being operated at a net loss?

EDIT: According to Wikipedia they had a net income of 120 million (euros? doesn't say) in 2008.

I would guess that most people don't know the relationship.

And to be honest it reminds me of all the asshole electronics salespeople who tap their hand on an off-brand Senor Volto microwave and tell you it has "GE guts, it's made by GE".

There might be a relationship but that doesn't necessarily mean one is built to the same quality as the other.

Bugatti doesn't exist to make VAG money, in any way shape or form, not even as a halo product. The folks who have ownership in VAG wanted an ultra-luxury vehicle for themselves and others like them, so they made one, costs be damned.

The connection is much less than tenuous; it is totally non-existent. A bugatti buyer is getting one because 1) Lots of other people can't 2) It's not a commoners car from a commoners badge like VW. VW buyers will never be able to get a Veyron no matter what, so the brand isn't in the calculus when buying a VAG product.

Even if they are operated at a net loss, it's a way to recoup SOME of the R&D money.

In my opinion, I dont think having a halo car works at all - Unless the halo car and other cars share something awesome (engine, suspension, advanced entertainment systems, really plush interiors etc)...

I mean, how can you justify buying a Dart because you love the Hellcat? They have nothing in common, beside the badge.

Bugatti only needs to sell one car in the U.S. each month to meet North American sales targets. Not even joking. ONE per month. That's the benchmark.

Maybe it's like trickle down halo economics. Bugatti is a halo for Bentley, Bentley for audi, audi for vw. And I'll give vag credit for handing their tech down the ladder pretty fast, at least for things like tdi and dsg from their audi Le mons cars, and quattro back in the day. Like others have said, it could just subsidize R&D

It's true. I saw a Bugatti Veyron online, then I went out and stanced a VW Cabrio (wasn't even mine, bet the dude was pissed, but yolo).
