"StoneCold" (StoneCold)

HEY YOU! STONECOLD WANTS YOU TO HELP PICK A NEW COLOR FOR HIS 1970 302 MUSTANG SPORTSROOF "HORSE CENTS"!
Having finished rebuilding an engine, and starting to fix the frame, the time is soon approaching (DUNDUNDUN) to think about paint. Now yes, you can say "Just paint it how you want!" but the problem is I don't know what I want to paint it.
As awesome as it would be to keep the patina and old drag car livery, the panels are going to need more than a little work done to them. I'm keeping the sport lamps even though it is not a Mach 1, since it's nicer than the stock grille I have, and I have the wires for them. The car will sit on 14" Magnum 500s as all my cars do (it's so easy to swap them around). The engine compartment will be black. It will have louvers, chin spoiler, rear spoiler, and the scoop with indicators in it (as pictured below)
SO. I have a few thoughts.
I could stick with the Grabber Blue and not have to paint absolutely everything . Black stripes would be incorporated, probably similar to this:
BUT. I've kinda worn off on Grabber Blue. I could go with what the VIN states is the original color, Grabber Green:
But I have to say, probably my favorite out of all the colors is white:
Except with the 1969 C-stripe (sans lettering):
WHAT SAY YOU, OPPOSITELOCK?!?! Requests for more pictures will be indulged in a timely fashion.

Me, I wouldn't touch the paint. I know it's messed up bad in place but I love that look.

Grabber Green.
The Lord FoMoCo decided that this car was to be Green, as per your VIN number.
Who are you, to say otherwise?
Plus, there are not a lot of cars who can pull off that color, and it look sublime.
Plus Plus, white or black is boring for a Muscle Car.

Personally, I love Grabber Blue. I wish my FR-S was Grabber Blue. That being said, if you really want to change it my vote is for Grabber Green.

IMO dark green looks spectacular.
But it is a pony car so something loud would be totally fitting too.

It would go with the VIN, and from what I hear, my car might have this package:
So it would be almost a disservice not to -_-
I'm getting a Marti Report on it with some of my birthday cash in November, so I'll know for sure then.

I'm painting my '66 convertible similar to that color green, like this:
And my neighbor has his Camaro in that orange color, so I'd try for something different ^_^

I reeaaaallllyy wish I didn't have to, but I'm having a photographer friend take some high quality shots of the car before we start sanding down, so it won't be forgotten. :')

If it is one of the original Grabber, it may be a capital offense to repaint it any other color than the Green it came with, and especially if there were only 740 of them ever produced.
Could it come up in value, if it's that rare?

White is my favorite, is the cheapest color, and covers up blemishes and hides dirt the best, but I didn't know if anyone was going to chime in something I hadn't thought of.
If people love the green this much though... I'm such a push over
XD

You should do what you want, don't do the green just because everyone else tells you to. I can't really think of many other colors though. I love that lighter blue (Not grabber blue) on the early 05-09's but I'm not sure how that would look on your 70's Mustang.

I have looked into later years' colors. Like for my '66, I really wanted to paint it that emerald green the New Edge Mustangs came in:

I personally would do my best to preserve as much of the original livery as possible. That car has history literally written on it, and it would be a shame to lose that. Repair/repaint what you need to in order to stabilize the car, but leave the parts of the panels with the livery that aren't damaged.
I can tell you that you'll get a lot more attention with the old racing livery than you will with any shiny paint job. I would walk past any of those other mustangs you posted to look at yours the way it is now.

A 66 in that green would look so cool! If I was going to paint a classic car in something that's not the original color, I would do something different and uncommon. That's another idea. Much like if you painted the 66 that color.

Imma fan of originality, so I say put it back to Grabber Green. Don't see too many of those around. White looks nice, but is too common, to me at least.
Or just paint it copper, and put the graphics back on it. (because pennies [cents] are copper, har har)

I know exactly what you mean since I do the same thing at car shows. I would love to keep the patina, but the patching and repair is going to be pretty intense; not much would be untouched besides the doors, trunk lid, and the topsides of the rear quarters. Would clearcoat just go on right over the old paint?

There are two black ones and one white one in my area, so you are correct on that front.
The copper is a clever idea! I just wonder if it would give off a cushy/Grande vibe. I'm not quite that old yet XD

Mmmm, Lime is definitely the color I would paint it if I was feeling pastel on a '71-'73 .
Also, Stang in the rain. :D

Just talked to an old-school paint guy where I work, he said the factory Ford paint is likely lacquer, and the lettering is likely enamel.
His first suggestion was if the blue is still good where the lettering is was to not touch it at all. Try and find some original lacquer for the repaired areas and just blend as well as you can. And if that fails see if there is a single-stage that plays well with the lacquer.
Barring that he said you should do some research into clearcoats that go well over lacquer paint(he liked RV86/RV87 but wasn't sure it was still available). Scuff the paint very lightly with a gray scuff pad to give it a little tooth, and clean it well with grease & wax remover(but be careful to test if the cleaner will lift the enamel lettering). Then spray the clear over everything.
The big concern is that in hot sun he original lacquer will heat up and flow a bit, which can lift clear over top of it over time. But if it is mostly going to live in a garage and not be out in all weather you should be ok.

You gotta go with the green.
I wish my car was supposed to be green lol
You could always tweak the green a little bit. Like is it supposed to be solid green? maybe throw a touch of metallic in it.
Maybe adjust the hue a tiny bit.
My 68 Montego is supposed to be Cardinal Red. When I get it repainted in 3,456 years (that's when I'll be able to afford it) I plan on making it the red-ist red I can make it.
I want it to slap you in the face just for looking at it.
