wow, I didn't know the 8.1 was an option on the Yukon, especially as late as 2005

Hell yeah 8.1 FTW. Basically the same MPG as the 6.0, but with an extra 100 lb ft of torque. I don't know why they didn't use it more. I had to search far and wide for that truck, ended up traveling 1,000 miles to bring it home, but worth the wait and search.

lovely! I think that body style SL is very under rated. The car in my eye right now is a w220 s600. What could go wrong for a 1st ( bought) car.

The newer W220 body style isn't bad. The S600 you're looking at is a pretty sweet ride, is it the NA model with either the M120 V12 or the slightly newer M137? Both engines are very reliable and run very well, but the gas mileage is not good at all. Unless you're making a serious load of cash, you're going to see about 8 city and 18 highway for gas mileage. The suspension is something to watch out for, the airbags do last a long time, but replacing them is serious money.
In true Doug DeMuro style, if you can find it on CarMax with a warranty, then you should be relatively okay. If you're buying from a private seller, I'd be really wary, because many people selling the cars today did not keep up on the maintenance, mostly obvious by the very low mileage on the car. If the maintenance isn't up, just say no. Dry rotted hoses, tiny electrical problems, and regular oil changes is a huge thing in these cars. Failing to keep up on those will murder your wallet.

thank you, what is a good market price for a s600

To be fair and honest, a "regular" S600 is in the ballpark of 8k-10k. Not a penny over, but lower is decent, just watch out for little things. Most things with a Mercedes part number come with a Mercedes price tag, and it's difficult to find these cars in junk yards to pull parts from. Not impossible, just difficult.
If it's an AMG, then I'm not sure. I'd be flexible and say up to $15k max. My SL was 12k. It's an AMG Sport model, there's very very few of them, and I couldn't let it go. If it's an AMG, unless you're going to do a lot of the work yourself, I might try and stay away from them. You automatically get thrown into the "leave a blank signed check, and we'll call you when it's fixed again" crowd if you take it to a shop.
They're very safe cars, they exude confidence , but they are getting older . Think of an older Miata, just way, way more expensive.
