First let me say...I'm in denial about even posting this. I'm a 911 guy always have been always will be. The whole reason I even LOVE cars is because of a ride in 930 turbo cabriolet circa 1992.
But honestly there's something about the new boxster and cayman that is drawing me in...it has to be one of the best shaped cars out right now. The straight 6 (horizontally opposed 6..whoops was late last night) noise is fantastic...I haven't driven one yet, but EVERYONE I've conversed with who has....said its amazing. Mid-engine, increased power, the predictable steering and its just gorgeous...it's got that presence that the original E-type had where you just get lost in the curves. Its as if the Carrera GT and 997 mated and these popped out 9 years later.
The new 911 is amazing. I agree. But the regular version...non "S", RWD with 3 pedals...what are you really getting with the convertible or the coupe? Dont get me wrong...the S, C4s, Turbo, GT3 are in different category.
BUT.... if you were going to get a regular porsche carrera...why would you? The cayman and the boxter are so much prettier and porsche-ier.
now if you'll excuse me...I need to go shower and cleanse myself.

I'd honestly get a Cayman S over a 911 hardtop. no joke.

me too, all day long. The 911 hasn't done anything for me since the 964, but the cayman just keeps getting better and better.

Is there an ugly Cayman? Color preferences withstanding.

I'd love a Boxster GTS.
Make it happen, Obama.

This has been true for a long time, only the 911 fanboys have failed to see it. The mid engine position is vastly superior no matter what magical trickery Porsche uses to make the 911 good. If Porsche chose to they could make a Cayman that would blow the 911 out of the water, but they can't do that because they can't admit that the RR layout doesn't make sense.

well, actually I thought about it for a bit...
I'd have to drive both, and then I'd make a choice with that in mind...
seeing as though I won't be buying a new Porsche for another 34 years (read: I'm 16 now, do the math :D) i'll probably be buying the 2048 911 or cayman S :P

As in, you'd love to own one, or you'd love for one to exist? If it's the former, I have good news for you. Otherwise, sucks to be you.

Dude....dude....just test drive the Cayman S PDK with the chrono pack. (I know I know, I support manuel too)
But seriously. Turn the Sports plus and Sport exhaust on. Shift at red line, roar like a mofo.
You won't stop smiling for days....

The Cayman and Boxster are getting so good these days it's hard to justify spending the extra money for a 911. The Cayman GTS is in opinion the best Porsche made today.

But my shirts have sleeves and I dont have a pony tail or tattoos...
messing around...but yes. this is an awesome car...but going around corners and the styling is not my favorite. Dont enjoy all the gills/vents.

I'm gonna blow your mind. I've driven the current Boxster S (pretty much same thing as the Cayman S) and the current Carrera S.
I swear the Boxster S is harder to drive! It's way more tail happy.
I found it harder to drive than an E90 M3, Carrera S, and F430.
The small-ish and light-ish Boxster S /Cayman S almost feel overpowered. Which is weird since the other cars I've driven have more power.

I kind of agree with you. The Cayman S and Boxster S look and feel more aggressive to me than the Carrera and Carrera S.
I feel like these days when getting a 911 you have to go GTS or above for it to be worth it. Ideally GT3.

This doesn't blow my mind at all, it's kinda expected actually (MR vs RR car, the MR being lighter...)
Just personally, I'd need to drive both before I bought one

The straight 6 noise is fantastic...
You don't mean to say it has an I6, do you?
The Cayman is epic. Especially draped in some Martini. So I do agree.

Having driven a 991 and 981 on the same track back-t0-back I would hands down take a Cayman over a 911 any day.

After sitting in Audis at the New York Auto Show, I was disappointed with the interior of the Cayman. The 911 was better. I understand Audi's have one the best interiors so the bar was set high, I just couldn't get over that Id rather sit in the 35k Audi vs 60k Cayman.
For exterior looks:
911 Coupe > Cayman
Boxster > 911 convertible (The hump for the rook looks like a weird afterthought.)

They're smaller, lighter and more tossable. The performance trims still come with a stick, and not some seven-speed-WAT-wand: a good ol' six-speed. The button-style parking brake needs to DIAF, but that's really my only complaint.
The new 991 doesn't do much for me outside of racecar trim. I'd have fun with it, but it's inching more and more towards an outright GT car over a sensible person's daily drivable track-ho.
(But ohman, I do want a 991 cup SO SO MUCH.)

Corners? This is a Corvette, not a Camaro (though the Z/28 is a track monster)
I'd be willing to bet the C7 with Z51 is faster around almost any track than the Cayman or Boxster for the same money, and it probably goes toe to toe with the 911. Heck, the C6 ZR1 and Z06 are both in the top 5 Nurburgring times, something even the 911 can't claim IIRC

That sounds awesome! Being able to make 315hp exciting is an achievement nowadays.
I need to con my way into a test drive... Never driven an MR car before.

the z/28 cost more than the cayman...its a complete farce of the cars original roots. The camaro all version was always about cheap horsepower and preformance.
for how much the z/28 costs now I'd by a copo/yeno or original RS. or a split window vette.
as stated I the vette is a great car pretty much ever since the C5. I was messing with the turns.
I really just dont enjoy the gills all over the car its a little cheesey.

that is a special by special model standards...I'm saying BASE Carrera....(S, C4, C4S, GTS, GT2, GT3 RS) etc. are all way better.
BASE Carrera vs. Cayman/Boxter.

The Z/28 costs more than a Cayman but it also demolishes it performance wise.
The original Z/28 was built specifically to race in the SCCA Trans America Race series. I don't think it's a farce of the cars roots but rather the ultimate follow on to that original namesake: a racecar from the factory.

It is exciting! And once you get the hang of it the oversteer is very easy to control.
You gotta drive this car. You feel every HP.

very sexy. But dat extra weight. We don't live in a snowy state. Down with AWD!
There is no RWD version, right?
Manuél Ferrari

I just thought everyone would assume that the 911 is harder to drive because the weight is all the way in the rear. And that used to be the case. I've driven classic 911s and they are scary as shit to drive fast!
But the modern 911s are really stable. The back end doesn't want to slide at all unless you cook the corner way too hard. But the current Boxster S / Cayman S are pretty tail happy. But the good thing is that the oversteer is easy to control when the tail does start sliding.
