Was having fun floating my upshifts for the first time today. I have a question though: I seem to have to pull the gearstick a little harder than normal. Expected, or do I have room to improve?

Are you driving an unsynchronized transmission? Not surprising that you'd have to pull harder but if your transmission is synchronized, you're probably just wearing out the synchros.

What is this floating thing?

You shouldn't have to pull the gearstick harder. That is wearing your synchros.
If you have the engine speed perfect, it should just slot in with very little resistance.

Hmmmm good to know. Got to get the timing perfect.

not using the clutch

It's not timing. If you are doing it on timing, you are doing it wrong.
Modulate the engine speed with the throttle and hold it steady, so that the road speed and the engine speed in the next gear match. That's when you slot it in.
Start by learning to double de-clutch on every. single. shift. Then you can work up to not using the clutch.

ok, I guess I meant timing as in 'when to act'

I think downshifting is less difficult, because it's easier to control building revs than falling ones.
But maybe I'm weird.

I would say that timing it does come into play as well. I used to ride shotgun in a lumber truck, and one of the drivers was able to, at least with the one gas truck we had, get that baby going off a stoplight without using the clutch. He would rev it a few times and as the engine caught itself, he would slot it into gear. No crunching, no grinding, just a little lurching and away we went. I was pretty amazed.

I never get why people like to shift without the clutch... maybe its just cause when i clutch in i get my exhaust to make good noises... :)

Gotcha. Too easy to mess something up IMO and my exhaust sounds too good when i shift. Thanks Mazda engineers and your timing :)

I've another question. Why not just use the clutch and synchromesh that the makers have helpfully provided?
