A friend of mine is having me do some maintenance on her ST165 Celica All-Trac. This particular car is also the cleanest example I've ever seen, so it's a pleasure to be able to work on it.
Tonight's agenda was an oil change. Now the oil filter on this car is down between the alternator and turbocharger. Because Toyota engineered the shit out of this thing, the alternator has a designated fresh cooling air duct/heat shield assembly that completely blocks access to the oil filter. So, JUST to get the filter off, you have to remove these:
Inconvenient? Yeah, but still. I wish Toyota put effort into making performance cars these days. This thing is so awesome.

Next time she has you service the car, can you please look underneath and tell me if the clutch fork is cast or stamped... I need to know because... reasons...

I definitely prefer the oil change on a gen3 3SGTE, at least in the MR2 it was down low on the right near the wheel well. You could reach it and the sump plug at the same time.

Yup. My dad used to have one. Try doing a timing belt change on it. It's possibly the worst thing ever.

I've done a timing belt job on a 5S-FE in an MR2 and the 4A-GZE in my AW11. Not fun either.

That is a 3S-GTE, just a Gen 1. On an MR2 3S-GTE, the filter is still up top but you don't have an alternator in the way. Just a bunch of intercooler piping haha.

No idea. I'll have a look next time. I don't know if you can even see it. There are a ton of underbody panels ducting air all over the place, including a duct from the grill back to the trans oil hardline, acting as a little bit of a cooler. Toyota really thought this car out. It's so cool.

Gen 3 in the MR2's are down low near the oil pan, I'm well aware of where the gen 2's are.. did the filter on the weekend :P
I used to have a Gen 3 in the old car that got wrecked. I think they moved it down near the sump to make room for the factory oil cooler.

That's pretty cool. I've never worked on a swapped car, just the USDM version.

it's weird that the US never got the later engine. Mine was an AUDM '94 with the gen 3 GE instead of the GTE. but I've got a couple of mates who did the gen 3 swap into their 91 JDM cars.
I think I'd rather a V6 swap than a gen 3 swap though. I'd consider a gen 4 swap if I can source one for cheap enough in Australia.
