What's your car's mileage? Did you put it on there or did you buy it with that? My trans am technically has somewhere north of 150,000. Not sure where because the log at the DMV stopped at 143,000 back in 1998. Not that it matters anyways since everything on the car is from different donor vehicles (trans from a Caprice wagon FTW) or new.

Camry is at 222,500. Bought/traded when it had 198k on it. Soon it'll tie my Subaru wagon for Most Miles On a Car I Own. It was at 240k when I sold it.
Trans Am had 34k or 134k on it according to the last oil change sticker. With as clean as the underside is (except for the patch panels), I am leaning toward 34k, or a VERY well taken care of Cali car with 134k.

My 740 has somewhere around 300k on it. My old 245 was traded in at 380k, and a friend of mine has a Volvo 240 sedan with north of 600k, still going.
The Mazda is at 48.5k and the Fiat is probably around 120k, given how wildly inaccurate the odometer and speedometer are.

The Volvo's got 213,500 on it. Aside from a front suspension rebuild about 100,000 miles ago, it doesn't appear to have had any major work done to it beyond maintenance. It shows its age in a few places (the interior and bodywork are a bit rough), but it drives like a car of half its mileage.
It still pulls like a train, too – as far as I know, it's still on the factory turbocharger. It whines a bit, and burns some oil, but it is showing no signs of giving up the ghost.

My 96 Ranger has between 500 to 600,000 miles. Don't know exactly due to rotting odometer gears, but I have always tracked the mileage with GPS and a notebook for work. Routine maintenance, timing belts, a few clutches and one tranny rebuild. Check engine light codes always dealt with promptly. Yes I could jump in it at any time and go cross country as I have many times. An after market odometer gear show's promise though, so I am sure I could show 500K someday even though it will be a million plus.

My 'backup', '94 Saab 9000: 205,000 (Still running fine, getting a bit of rust here and there)
My wife's '91 Saab 900: 278,000 (Needs some suspension work and a little bit of bodywork, all fine otherwise).
Saab engines just go on forever. I remember pulling the head on my '94 at around 155k (blown gasket), the internals still looked like new.

My First Samurai (1985.5 4 banger). 295151 miles (475,000K!) Well maintained by first and second owner, and me, except for one botched oil change when tipsy, and a grueling hill climb with 2 L less oil than she should have had. Floors, rotten, rear corners rotten. All that was ever done to her was timing belt every 100K, new spring bushings and shocks, one clutch and one gas tank replacement. Rebuilt the engine, then sold her for a deposit on a house. The 2" Shackles and 235/75/15 tires were all she ever needed. I miss that little mountain goat.

No photos, instrument cluster failed at around 340k miles and I replaced it with one out of an EX model with a tach, old odometer didn't fit in new cluster so now it reads almost half of what is actually on it. Finally (and I can't verify this first hand but have no reason to doubt the authenticity) my uncle's friend has a job where he drives a lot...he recently went to trade in his 2007 (I think) crew cab silverado ... he keeps his vehicles clean and well maintained so dealer looks it over and is like "yea we'll give you (insert monetary amount here) for it"...so he's excited...while they are starting paper work the manager comes back in a bit of a rush and is all like "you didn't tell me it had 330K on it! My 2004 Mercury Sable wagon has 237K miles, and my wife's 1998 Camry (manual) has 190K miles. My BIL had a Chevy Cadavalier that was still running well with 240K miles.

Only 148xxx on this guy, picked it up in 2005 at 128k. My DD through most of that time was a '93 SHO, got it in 2003 at 149K and sold it around 185K a couple years ago, that one is in the 2teens now. My DD now is a Continental with 125xxx.

Should I buy an XJ?
If so, what should I be looking for, and looking out for?

Depends on what you want it for. It's not the best daily driver, not the best for winter driving either because it's RWD when you're not in 4WD, if it's windy you'll get blown across the road, and it's probably not the safest thing out there. Brutal on gas, rear drum brakes suck, feels small on the inside because it is. But it's fun as hell offroad, cheap/easy to work on (easy as in it's simple stuff on paper, but you may have to PB blast years of rust and dirt off of everything and let it sit for a while and then use all the hand strength you can muster), and there's a lot of information out there should you choose to do fun stuff to it.
If you want to get one, I think it was the '96 that was notorious for cylinder head cracks. One of the motor mounts bolts is prone to failure. It's hard to find any without rocker rust, not to mention any rust covered by the rear bumper end caps. The 4.0L is known to run forever, but everything around it has a much shorter lifetime: fuel pump, pretty much every sensor, etc. If it's lifted or modded in any way, you'll want to know who did what and when, and it'll be tough to find a stock one in good shape. Power windows will probably die on you. Rear hatch may not work, but that wasn't too hard to fix. The 5spd manual is pretty rare to come across. Watch for bad ujoints or ball joints, and try to test drive at highway speeds to make sure it doesn't have deathwobble.
I feel like I'm missing something, but just have a mechanic check it. The newest XJ you can get will be 13 years old and probably not babied for those 13 years.

Thanks for the quick, detailed response! This is all great info.
It won't be a daily, I do want it for winter driving, and Oklahoma is very windy. I also want it for camping and for trails and maybe some overlanding, eventually.
I'm also considering old 4Runners and Pathfinders.

You're welcome! If you're still interested in one, make sure you test drive it on a windy day. Mine is terrifying: relatively light, tall, and the aerodynamics of a toaster. I also hate how it handles on ice, but I had ATs on all last winter.

I'm been driving an M3 on all-seasons the last two winters, so it can't be much worse - ha!
Thankfully, Tulsa doesn't get as much snow and ice as places further north.

2000 & 2001 were prone to heads cracking, but there may have been a recall. There was a fix, though, i.e new better cylinder heads. '99 is viewed as the best year by many people, although I prefer the styling of the '96 and earlier.
The 4.0 has a really flat torque curve, and pulls all the way from 1200 rpm to redline (5500 rpm or so). Mine (in a '91 Comache) made it almost to 310,000 miles, the last 20k miles were put on by me, and were abusively hard... as in I was breaking axle shafts offroad, and winding it out to its top speed (115ish mph) for prolonged periods on a regular basis. The motor still runs great and pulls just as hard, if you ignore the horrible knocking from the bottom end. Currently saving up for speed parts to rebuild the motor.
If you are looking for one for mostly winter use, try to find one with the select-trac (np242) transfer case. It's got a full-time 4wd option, i.e. awd. The command-trac cases (np231) don't have a center diff so it's not ideal for use on paved roads that aren't completely covered in snow and ice. That said, my Comanche had no issues getting around in a Canadian winter in mostly 2wd. I mostly only used 4wd for stopping and starting at traffic lights... locking the axles together meant the front wheels wouldn't lock up as easily when stopping, and then I could get going again without spinning the rears. Once I was moving again I'd be back to 2wd.
Saskatchewan is also very windy, but the only time I would really have considered it an issue was once when driving into a 65mph head wind, and that was only a challenge due to powering into the wind. Crosswinds weren't ideal, but if they were blowing the Jeep around, they would have been blowing just about any else around. I've yet to drive a car that is completely immune to our wind.

Thanks for all this! I'm still on the lookout for the right rig.
