I had a discussion with a few of you today. Some mods. Some not.
And there is a mea culpa coming as a result of one of those.
First, to the mods:
I understand that in many ways, that the amount of conflicting interests you as mods must face, as well as acknowledge that the sheer volume of competing voices, makes your jobs difficult. Oppo has grown from a hundred to a thousand. And growing pains do not make the journey easy, either for us on the ground, or you as the gatekeepers. You are also charged with policing many who cannot or will not police themselves. You deal with a cast of characters and interests and backgrounds about as diverse as any. And many of those conflict by the very nature of their bones.
I understand as well, that, from your moderating view (which is a view we could probably all adopt) that you are here doing what you do not to protect other special interests or the blogs they inhabit, you are here protecting this place both from itself as well as from scrutiny that comes from the stirring of the shit.
And this is not something that I had considered, nor perhaps have others working the floor. Perspective, right?
To everyone:
What I mean to say is that in the past, and especially recent past, there has been an upheaval elsewhere. You know, that one. The big one. The one that changed how things sort of work around these parts.
But what we as commenters may not know, or think about, is that in the wake of that, many very powerful interests from many places are probably seeking to keep things as copacetic and neat and undisturbed as possible.
And if shit is stirred, hard and long enough, what does that mean for us here? If we are the ones stirring it? What might the casualties be?
Ask the tallest blade of grass what it thinks of it's prospects when the scythe swings by on a tour.
Well. What if you woke up tomorrow and Oppo was gone? Not saying that's a possibility, but what if?
All of it.
Poof.
Permanent 404.
That's something that I didn't think about, but it warrants a thought or two.
Imagine losing the majority of the connections made over the last few years, and for many of you, myself included, the primary social network of precedence. That shit would suck. How would you feel if you were the cause of it? Or if some shit stirring post were the cause of it.
Is that worth being the tallest blade of grass?
Probably not.
(And it's important to note that this concept comes from no inside information, or any sort of in depth conversation, but merely the logic of sitting back, and thinking about it. Historically, what has happened to places and privileges that have been abused or caused headaches to others (Gifgate, as an example)? Those privileges go away. )
And with that thought in mind, I want everyone to think about self-governance.
In what you post. In what you reply to. In what you bring to the table in terms of interaction.
It's in the handbook. That whole "What's my checklist for engaging this opinion that I don't like/having this conversation" bit. If you don't like it, don't comment on it, and save yourself the negative mojo. Save yourself the dogpile. Everybody's internet dick is twelve feet long, well, mine's at least fifteen, but that's irrelevant. Waving it means nothing so zip that shit up.
You are in control of whether or not you pay attention to what someone else says, and you are solely in control of whether or not you feel the need to interact with it. And that is worth remembering. It isn't a sacrifice of dominance to just walk away. Wash your hands of it, hit dismiss, condemn some personal jesus to die on some other cross.
You don't *have* to prove your point in the face of an opposing one. And that goes for white knights as well as dark horses. No point here is worth any conflict. And everyone will be happier if that cancer is allowed to shrivel. Don't let it grow. Don't make the moderators work to do things that you should be doing as an automatic.
It is your responsibility to take the higher road. Allow people to be wrong on the internet. It won't spoil your milk or give you athlete's foot.
This place is great. But it is not irrevocable.
Not personally. Not broadly.
It is no more sacred and inviolable than any other place. We like to think we own it, but the only one who does is the person who owns the whole shebang. And to him, we're just another sub blog.
So the power is with you and I and everyone else. Don't give in to other idiots. Police yourselves.
And I will vow quite strongly to do the same. IF anyone feels that I am preaching from a pulpit carved of hypocrisy, police yourselves and let it go. It won't be hard, and the message will be well received by those who do not feel that way.
Mods:
By way of this, I apologize for presuming anything in the past about why things are done the way they are sometimes done.
I apologize for not seeing the bigger picture.
And I apologize for making mods do the work that I should be doing myself, as should we all.
Mods, you may delete this or enshrine it. I'll leave that squarely in your court.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men should do nothing." - Sir Edmund Burke.
While this space is moderated by people who take time out of their day to oversee, this is a community run blog. This is our "neighborhood" these are our friends and neighbors who are persecuted. I will continue to make observations and call out people who I do not think further the goals of this blog by treating others poorly. Would you want your wife, girlfriend, daughter, niece, best friend to be subject to this crap? I know I wouldn't. If we don't do the right thing as a community, and put the mods in an authoritarian position, this place gets a lot less fun for everyone.
Do the right thing. Be a civil human being, keep our "neighborhood" safe for all.

If Oppo was gone tomorrow....................I actually don't know what I'd do. Oppo is legitimately the only way that I get through the day. it organizes everything I love into 1 place.

I definitely missed something today. I read the whole letter, but I'm lost as to what happened? I was on here all day and saw nothing that would necessitate such a powerful statement. Then again, I may of missed it after all, who knows.

We've gotten to the point that it's not going anywhere.
Even if Denton axes Jalopnik (I don't think that will ever happen; we make him money), Oppo will live on elsewhere.
Too many of us have spent too much time here, and gotten to know too many like-minded people.

We're not just another forum like VWVortex or some crap.
We're a legitimately special place.

I think we have all taken the bait. When I was just starting out here, I made a post about a student owned 458. . . not my highest point here, but that's a story for another day. Someone said something to me and then it all went downhill. In any case. I have learned from that, and try my best not to do it any more. And so should everyone else, one mistake is fine, everyone does it, but repeated and people start to question your intelligence.

If Oppo was gone I'd send an email to Matt and hope for an answer as I really enjoy writing articles here... Well, I mostly enjoy when they go on the FP to be honest. It does get kind of frustrating when you spend quite sometime in what you think is a nice article but get 2 comments and 100 views...
I see Oppo as a nice plateform to hopefully find an audience interested in what I have to say/write/show. I have to admit, I most likely enjoy being published on the FP and have some kind of readership, people debating over my ideas and views of things....
While I do "know" and recognize some of you (know what you drive, what area you live in, maybe what you like also a little), I don't really have any "friends" here. I mean I cannot put any single face on a screen name and that's a big problem for me. I also live kind of far away now and won't have any chance of meeting anyone but MAYBE some Opponauts living in japan...
If Oppo was gone tomorrow, I think it would suck for me, but not that much overall... I think I would just send articles straight to Kat and hope getting published.

This wasn't that long ago. And I'll be 100% honest, between this and your youtube response on the depression post, you gained a lot of respect from me. I like this Clay. This Clay is the awesome guy who sometimes acts a bit weird, maybe a tad offensive, but apologizes and then moves on. This Clay is the guy that represents Oppo in times of need. Vocal, no nonsense... straight up and eyes open.
I won't pretend to understand all of your positions or how they came to be yours. But I will say that I do generally believe in second chances. Especially when someone has shown passion in a positive manner. I do hope that you'll rejoin us in a couple of weeks if you feel it is in your best interests. In order for Oppo to be diverse, we have to be diversely represented. I will say that posts like today's don't help. But... I understand that particular rant / vent.
If you'd like to talk, I may be slow to respond, but you can reach me at gamecat235 at gmail.
Cheers.
