Failure test to see how their cage does.

This is why compressed gas is so scary. If this was a liquid, no big deal.

Not what I was expecting - looks like the rim seperated, I was expecting the rubber to fail!

Right? Makes me wonder how these guys are put together. I'm not sure if I like that it's controlled enough that it will explode in that manner or if it would be better just to blow out on the tread or sidewall...

That is why they use inflation cages on split rim wheels. It's not the tire failing, it's the rim. Usually from not being properly re-assembled.

You've obviously never burst a tire before. Even a 8" mower tire will make a pretty big pop when it blows at 30 psi. Pressure is no joke.

I know two people that have gotten fucked up by inflating heavy equipment/implement tires without a cage (at the same business) and having them explode.

One dude got huge scars on one arm from where the bones tore through. He's on permanent partial disability through the place's insurance.

The other guy took a chunk of split-rim to the dome. He's a vegetable now. Family sued the company and the insurance company, got settled out of court for a very large amount of money.

Wow that's terrible. Aren't these tires over 100psi anyways? Seems like the safety factor should be a bit higher.

But yeah...working around compressed gas can be extremely dangerous. I used to work for schlumberger doing essentially what you see in the video.

Nothing ever happened, but man did you hear some horror stories. Guys getting launched 30 feet; steel pipe flying hundreds of feet....glad I'm not doing that anymore.

The guy that got hit with the split rim happened first. They finally bought a safety cage afterwards. The second guy got hurt because the tire he was working on wouldn't fit in the cage. They got a bigger cage after that.
