The T-5 will explode the second your tires gain traction.

Don't have much experience with the T-5 but it was used in a lot of applications. Some made quite a bit of power. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borg-Warn…

in VERY light, lower torque applications, the world class t-5 used in Ford applications was the strongest. Good luck getting it to hold up in a t-5

yeah max torque rating on the strongest boxes found in a ford is 330 ft/lbs. Tremec who sells these in the aftermarket only rates them up to 300 ft/lbs

Looks like I'll need to find an old Muncie M-21 or something to handle the torque. I'd love to swap in a 5 speed over a 4 though.

Awesome! Now I would just need to get all the parts to do the swap from auto to manual

Or... Swap in that LT-1 for more power...

LT-1's are crap as far as I am concerned. Optispark sucks. Might as run a gen 1 sbc. If you're gonna do an engine swap. Ls1 or bust

FINALLY someone agrees with me.

The roommate has a friend who bought a Roadmaster wagon with the 305. I've had three 305-powered B-bodies, and they were all very acceptable engines. His buddy's yanking the 305 and dropping an LT1 into it.

My reaction:

Well 305's are the small block that should have been aborted. I have NEVER seen a 305 make any power or get substantially better economy than a 350.

I dont like LT motors because they offer all of the electronic and fuel system of an LS1 but have the power of a traditional Carbed gen 1 small block.

I had three 305's. I consistently got 23-26 mpg with each of them. They weren't powerhouses but they are completely acceptable engines.

These were later-design 305's - there's no way I would defend the 1980's 305.

I remember in the monte SS forums a guy who just swapped the factory 305 for a goodwrench 350, kept all the smog stuff, same computer, only thing he changed was the knock sensor to a 350. (different frequency due to block difference) he claimed a 2mpg increase in fuel economy while he added 70 hp.

Pump the brakes.

There's some misinformation afoot.

The LT1 T56 does swap in, but you will have to get a special flywheel and adapt the LT1 clutch hydraulics to work with your current pedals. You are stuck using LT1 clutch kits as well.

An LS1 T56 swaps in as well but you can run a standard 26 spline GM clutch and manual linkage if you are so inclined. Just like it was a factory 4 speed install, but with a 6 speed trans. Or you can run a standard clutch with LS1 hydraulics.

Go LS1 T56 if you go the 6 speed route. Better support and better options.

As for the T5s, the best factory T5 will work but may be pretty short lived. You can upgrade them to hold more torque but at that point you might as well go with the T56.

It would make ZERO sense to me for you to go from a 700R4 to a Muncie M21, unless you've GOTTA have a manual. A Super T10 may be a better option.

As far as the LT1 is concerned, there is a metric shit ton of bad info out there about the engine. It has a lot more potential then people give it credit for. It is not worth a swap IMO, but I wouldn't pass over a decently priced LT1 car because of Internet trash talk.

I dunno man, I like the 305. I like the 350 more, but the 305 is still useful.

The V8 720 I'm gonna be doing this winter is getting a 305 with a 2 barrel. Considering it can baste the tires for two blocks in an '85 S10 longbed, it's more than enough for a shortbed 720.
