And I spun out. Took a whole corner of cones with me.

Kinja'd!!!

I also managed to destroy what was left of my tires, but I ordered supersports a week ago, just waiting for them to come in. Added some lovely cone rash but it should wash right off.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Only thing that agitates me is that I lost one of my painted reflectors so back to stock for me.

Yet I still came home with the largest smile possible.

A little wax will take those cone marks right off! Alpine White or Mineral?

Alpine, it comes off easy as the last time I washed it I sealed and waxed the paint. It just sucks that I'm back to the Orange reflectors.

Has anyone ever tried using painters tape on the front outer edges of their bumper to avoid cone rash? Was this your first time trying autocross?

Haha that's what 400+ HP does at AutoX

Imagine once you have the super charger ...

It's a lot better to nail a few cones that to nail a telephone pole. Sounds like you had an enjoyable time (in a safe way), which is more important than almost anything.

The last autox event was full of curbs and poles so I took it less risky. I'm always game for legal tire burning.

2nd, painters tape is for pansies. It comes right of with clay bar or washing. Polish is rarely needed. Anything that will permenately mar the paint will go through thin tape anyways, it just makes cleanup easier.

what's wrong with it?

I just borrowed my dads classic truck and it wouldn't start after I stopped to get food. Waiting for AAA bow. It's having trouble cranking. Gonna see if a jump gets it going

Spun rod bearing, need to rebuild the motor.

Try hitting the starter a couple times with something hard, might do a temporary trick.

Our cars are better suited to full size tracks in my experience. At autox it's like fishing with dynamite. Effective, maybe, but not graceful. Glad you had fun though! Sorry about your reflector. I hate those things so much I got rid of mine.

A euro bumper would be nice, but I can't justify the price. Autox is insanely fun in our cars, and if my pzeros didn't suck, insanely fast. Nothing turns like it, I was going through half chicanes and tight slaloms like no tommorow. If I my driving skills (wait I mean tires) weren't bad, I'd be one of the fastest street legal cars there. You should really try it out, it's probably not as fun as a full track day, but I think it does a great job of teaching you how to drive. Oh, and any excuse to burn rubber is a good excuse, especially for $35.

Funny thing is. A lot of guys run cars that aren't great at short precision tracks. That includes my 2 tons of grocery getter. I doesn't bother me though. I'm not really that competitive. Its just so much damn fun I dont care if I win or lose.

AAA got there before I read your trick. The jump worked. Took it back to my dads

Oh, I've done cones before. Did a short course at the end of the Tire Rack Street Survival program in late August actually (I was instructing) so the frantic steering is still fresh in my mind lol. Never did the SCCA variety though. Maybe I'll give it a whirl next season if I have a free weekend but the thought of standing around all day to drive for 5 minutes...eh. I'm used to 200 minutes on track in a weekend =) I hear you on the $35 though...

I lucked into my "euro" bumper by having a deer lose balance onto my hood/bumper when I maybe nudged it going about 7mph. Called iND about the euro bumper, they wanted like $1500 which is basically robbery. Our cost for the oem bumper was like $550, so my dad suggested we could take some material from below the reflectors on the old bumper and fill in the holes on the new one. Worked perfectly! Definitely helps to have a body shop in the family but moral of the story is that reflector delete is possible for much less money than those terrorists are asking for a primed euro bumper.

The shave and fill method is what I would do I damage my bumper. 1500 for a piece of molded plastic is insane. The autox group I go with does 2 run groups. When your not running your working the track, which involves picking up the cones, dodging cars that are spinning out, talking to the other "workers", etc. It goes by much quicker than it feels like as it keeps you busy. I agree track days give you more time to run, but a few days with an scca group will really push your comfort levels. You could probably do it between track days, it won't hurt anything except your bumper.

Ugh. Bumper is a sore subject today. Pulled into my own garage (for another week - bought a house, moving, etc) a bit too quickly and scraped the bottom edge of my left carbon splitter. Blah. Definitely can do autox between track days, especially next year I might have to cut back with the new house and all. Plus I'm trying to race so that's a whole other thing. And I'm picking up a truck for this winter so the M is going to become a "sometimes" car. Probably should loop it in a parking lot a couple times next season just to keep it on its toes =D

Don't get a truck, get a Sti/wrx, unless you need the hauling ability. You'll enjoy it more and its better in snow until clearance becomes and issue. You won't hate yourself seeing the M parked and then only having a boring f150 to drive around. I just bought cf splitters for $75, ebay, but only $75. Check out the forums for a good deal if it bothers you a lot, or apply a crt paint scheme to them with a fade to carbon fiber (my possible plans).

My splitters were also cheapies (though not that cheap) and they've taken quite a beating on track this summer. Might be replacing them anyway or going with a full splitter. Completely agree about the subi but the truck is an 04 silverado 1500 4x4 and it's free to me (I think) due to some body shop related circumstances. Has 100k on it and apparently is in good shape. With the house I really do need the additional utility. I'll still drive the M most of the year as my daily I think! Of course, none of this would probably be happening if my gf still had her awd V70. That car was the best. Alas, it wasn't worth repairing and now we have a leased jetta in the driveway along with the M. She's the one who needs the STi hatch!

I bet the workers at that station just loved you for that! :P

Well I learned there is a hand signal to call in all near people to reset cones. I was over halfway done so there was a car fast approaching. I wasn't the worst spin out, a mustang took out the whole finish line of cones. I almost did that my first lap but barely managed to save it with some oppo (people cheered at that save as they were sure I was going to lose it). You know it's bad when the instructor to your right says "oh shit". It was a very open air strip so a lot of cars were pushing it with 0 rish of hitting anything.*

*except cones.

Ive never heard of that, although Im part of what is probably the smallest region in the SCCA where we never have more than 2 cars on course at once and rarely have a worker station more than 25 yards away from their furthest designated cone. Plus we'll throw red flags faster than you could imagine so when somebody does have a moment, and it definitely happens, we don't have to risk anything. With that said I would love to compete on a larger course with a lot of competition.

It was a minute course, only 2 cars at a time. By the time a spun out the other car was on its way there. I'm pretty sure red flags were thrown, but I do remember seeing about two corner groups of people running to set up the large amounts of cones I took out. I'm pretty sure they just don't like downtime, but working as a corner worker I never felt at risk. I'd still give autocrossing an 11/10.
