without even looking at a fiesta or focus. Phew, close call!
She even mentioned how the interior of the civic looks dated, and how other cars don't come with push button starts. I pointed out she could option a Fiesta SE with just about everything on her list so she's going to check it out and hopefully bring me along so the salesman doesn't gyp her.

If I were looking in that category, I'd most likely end up with a Jetta TDI Manual.

no offence to the VW fans out there (I love some older VWs myself) but after hearing some of the crazy shit that goes wrong in the cars from the past 10 years, wouldn't recommend. Nightmarish stuff like wheels snapping off, double square bolts stripping, thousand dollar dealer jobs for simple stuff etc.

I'm sure a civic with a stick would be a reliable, good vehicle.
And why do people want push button start anyway? Not being snarky; would like to understand the appeal

My dad's had loads of friends who've had things go wrong with their VWs, ranging from dying gauges to continually unreliable air suspension that failed weekly. I even had the experience of riding in a Touareg from Galway to Dublin and upon accelerating away from a toll booth, one of the driveshafts snapped.

You left out their most famous trait, the horrendous electrical systems. No other brand comes close to the amount of consistent electrical problems they have. :P
But otherwise, TDI FTW.

The Civic and Fiesta aren't in the same class. Why didn't you recommend her to a comparable Focus?
Edit I see you already did. I would also throw in the Fit for consideration.

I don't get push button start, or touch screen this and that. I really like the feel of sticking the key in and turning it and pressing buttons.
And no I'm not old, I'm 18.

I was thinking the same, the Fiesta and Focus are closer to the Fit than to the Civic.

I don't either, but she's not an enthusiast. She likes her car to be an A to B driver with a few toys and apparently civics, kias, and toyotas aren't being innovative enough. After hearing about the fiesta and focus on oppo a hundred times, I figure I'd recommend it. Turns out a fiesta with all the options she wants is priced well below a comparable civic. Only problem I guess is the resale value. Civics are still riding the wave and you can always get a good return with one of those.

Usually push button comes with keyless entry, too. So you walk up to the car with your key in your pocket, open the door, push the button, and drive away. It's nice to have, don't have to fumble for your keys.

Yeah and as much as I like what Ford has done lately, I think the jury is still out on the longevity of some of their cars. The "smartest" choice is a civic with A/C and a stick but of she's going to buy a new car she may as well get a fun one since that what she seems to want: A commuter car that's fun with lots of bells and whistles?

Hey! As the driver of a 2013 Civic, I have to say.... It all depends.
Are we talking about a base model here? Because the LX is great for that. But when you start loading up a Civic, the EX-L becomes wayyyy overpriced.
The reason I have my Civic is the stupidly low lease rate. I pay $199 per month. Only put $500 down.
The civic has resale value. Only the Corolla will rival it.
Consider the Dart maybe???

The Fiesta is the top selling super mini in Europe (and has been for some time), just hasn't caught on as much in the USA as it's relatively newly introduced here and super minis are a niche. The big reliability hitters are already worked out. The only concern is the powershift auto which is a steaming pile of crap. If you get a stick you're good. Still won't beat a Honda or Toyota in resale since those guys have a couple decades of good will built up.
