As you didn't list a price, I'll assume the vehicle is free. Confirm this and I will make arrangements for delivery.

We owe around 9K on it, and if I got a Saabaru for 8-10k, we would only be out around 5k, and that would be made up with insurance and the fact that I can actually track it! That and I'm worried it will be a VW and start breaking randomly (it hasn't yet)

No, I would leave the Saabaru stock (except for a small BOV and possibly wheels/tires)

What's less reliable than a newish VW nearing 100k miles? A Saabaru/WRX, probably. Lots of knobbish previous owners there. The Saab less so, but watch out for questionable mods and signs of previous hoonery if you get one. You have to be reeeeal careful which one you buy, and even then, that's not the most reliable engine, either. Those have a tendency to burn oil after a while. That combined with a flat-4 layout is a big uh-oh. It requires more work to tend to. You'd probably take good care of it, I'm sure, but yeah.
Hate to say it, but your dad may be right. I'm guessing the VW has been yours the whole time and well looked after? Even "less reliable" marques hold up well when taken care of as they're supposed to be.

You could talk to this guy. I've talked to him a bit, it's quite a solid car, but I passed on it.

Huh
Just not in the market of selling it now... although I could sell it myself on Craigslist for 12.5-13.5K... TDIs are in high demand and there are no Sportwagens on Craigslist in Wichita or the surrounding areas ;)

Fair enough, just thought I'd throw my offer in.
I actually looked at a TDI sedan with the DSG last weekend. It's got EGR problems, so I'm seeing what it'll take for me to fix.
The almost 50mpg is really appealing.

You want one with the 6 Speed... lots of turbo lag, but it feels like mountains of torque when the boost comes on (1750-2k RPM) all the way to 4k RPM! All 236 magnificent torques!

If they had any 6-speeds with problems for cheap I'd buy one, but you get what you get when buying as-is.
That being said, the DSG really isn't bad at all. I prefer manual, but it's good enough for a commuter car, which is what I'd use it for.

To each their own, but I agree, for an auto, the DSG isn't bad at all, especially compared to the Mercedes 5 Speed Auto in my mom's 2008 Chrysler 300 Touring. That sucks the life right out of the car (and your body too...)
