"It's a "Porch-uh"" (ikazuchi)

Case in point. You never know (even at a track day event) when you might get in a nasty accident. This guy was hit head-on and the impact would have snapped his neck if he didn't have a HANS on. Instead he walked away (after some hyperventilating). Regular belts allow some give so the body isn't held rigidly in place. Plus the added weight of the helmet adds to the force your vertebrae will take in a hit. So while it's an expensive item, make sure to factor that into the cost of your next track day or race.
Sadly, a 911 and an Alfa had to die in the making of this film.

Your body will stay at rest but your head unrestrained likes to stay in motion. Definitely not a pretty picture.

That looked terrifying. Cold tires are a bitch, and that was a bad place to stall on the track as well.
Did the driver get a concussion or anything? I was always taught that there are three collisions in any car accident - the one with your car and whatever you hit, the one with your person and the inside of the car, and the one with your organs (especially the brain) and the inside of your body. The HANS definitely saved the guy's neck, but the brain bouncing around as a result of the motion can't be good.

I heard that both drivers were "okay," but not sure if any follow-up was done.

Having participated in many track days in my time, my first and blaring question is "where the hell was the caution?" You have a participant spun, pointing oppositie direction, not moving and on the track. If you watch the video closely, there is a corner station, with workers present at the entrance to the corner he spun. There are two corner workers here, so one is supposed to be watching corner entry through apex while the other watches apex through corner exit.
There should have been an immediate yellow here which would have slowed that pack of cars down and possible avoided this accident. Fortunately nobody was hurt, except the cars. It could have and should have been avoided.

Dude, there is a flag stand IMMEDIATELY on the inside of that corner before he spins. What kind of an event is this? You've got to imagine there was a yellow waving like crazy - and no one slows down? And what kind of line is the Alfa taking anyway? I don't understand this whole thing... But yes, I always wear my HANS. People who think you don't need them "because it's just an HPDE" don't understand physics, which doesn't care one bit whether an event is timed or not.

Don't confuse your HANS and Franz. That would be awkward.

It should probably be mentioned that the HANS is completely useless with stock belts. The only neck restraint known for working with stock belts is the Simpson R3

When a 911 gets out of shape, it is terrifying to watch to me. Seems to always end up facing the wrong way.

Would you rather the people die than the cars die?
The best line I've ever heard is this: "If you aren't willing to walk away from your car and never see it again, don't take it on a race track." Truer words have never been spoken.
