Went Mountain Biking Yesterday

Unbeknownst to me, small-game hunting season had started on the 15th and this particular trail is a hunting area. About 3/4 of the way in I was stopped by a guy with a rifle draped over his arm: "you can't be here, can't you fucking read???" "sorry, I didn't know hunting season had started yet" "well, it did, you gotta turn around!" "wow, sorry I didn't realize, no need to be such a dick about it".

What pissed me off most? I had a really really good pace going! It was sure to be a personal record (my pace was 1mph faster than last time). Secondly, why did he need to be such an asshole? So what, I made some squirrels and rabbits run 20 yards away from wherever I was?

Also turns out this sign "that I couldn't fucking read" is the smallest thing you've ever seen in your life that looks like one of those legal notices that are put up buy ignored by everyone , this needs a BIG ORANGE sign that says HUNTING SEPTEMBER 13th THROUGH JANUARY SOMETHINGTH.

Rant over. I shall now exclusively bike in non-hunting areas until January Something-th.

You live in a rural area and didn't know that hunting season starts the second week of September, like it does across the entire north american continent, and has for a 100 years?

Seriously dude, you're trespassing into a live-fire area and likely not wearing any sort of required high-viz gear. You're putting your life at risk, and likely ruining someone else's day/life if you get hit. What'd you expect him to say?

I do NOT live in a rural area. I work with people that do, and I asked them when hunting season starts and they indicated it was about a week from now, also there were 3 or 4 other bikers on the trail, so that further made me think it was OK to ride. Sure, I should've looked it up, but no need to be a dick about it.

Yeah I know. I think the most frustrating thing about this was the lack of CLEAR hunting signs and the lack of initiative from the MTB-course people to put up a clear sign. It was bound to happen. I think next year I'll take it upon myself to put up a clear sign the last time I ride before hunting season starts.

I live in a rural area and I have no idea when the different hunting seasons are. We're just uninformed.

Yep, Michigan. Rabbit/Squirrel, small-game season in other words.

I came to the conclusion in a reply to Calzone, that next year I will take it upon myself to put up a clearer sign, this happened because of a lack of initiative mostly from the people maintaining the mountain bike course, and somewhat the hunters (or whoever puts signs up on state land) that know it's a trail frequented by mountain bikes. One or the other should have put up a much clearer sign to NOT ride.

Land managers/Park district/DNR/whomever are responsible for signs. That may be a thing to bring up at their next meeting so they can make it right for next year.
