Kinja'd!!!

There is a Jeep trail up a canyon in American Fork Canyon called Major Evans gulch, it rises from 6400 feet to 11,000 feet to basically here.

Kinja'd!!!

These are winter pics but in the summer the road is totally drivable in something like the cruiser except...

Kinja'd!!!

its private property....the ENTIRE top of the gulch. Owned by that single cabin owner. I can't stand that the mountains can be bought and squirreled away by a single person like that. These are community resources sir. I know that they legally CAN and there are probably some good reasons for it, but I hate it. These lands should be a public trust.

Communist!

You filthy poor, don't you know how hard the owner worked to inherit that piece of land?

Reminds me of the time a group of friends and I decided to camp in southern Colorado. Being in our early '20s we didn't have a specific place to camp but would find it on the way since its so pretty up there (we are from Albuquerque) . The trip ended up being a few days of finding breathtaking camp sites that are on private property and having to camp off the side of the highway and making our way back to Navajo lake in NM.

I mean if I had the money I totally would buy the top of the mountain, but if there was a trail I would also make it open so others could enjoy. I would fence my property line along the road and put up signs (Private property, no trespassing, stopping, or camping) and thats that.

Related: Is Ted Turner still planning on eventually making all of his land public access (managed by a private trust)? Thought I'd read that at some point.

Unfortunately if they are on your property when they barrel roll down the mountain, you'll get sued. As much as it sucks I can understand y. I agree with you tho.

no, pissed. I hate private development on these lands. These are the future of outdoor activities for my kids and their kids. I do subscribe to the john Muir "its only crazy super hippies like me that should enjoy these lands" philosophy, but I do think there should be some accountability for what we do with our natural resources.

That would be pretty great, 2 million public trust acres? killer.

We had a similar situation out here where a BLM trail cut right through some private property. It's a fairly well used trail, and there were never any issues until the owner of that land sold it and the new owner did a land survey. They were reportedly out there blocking off "their" road with a shot gun. BLM had to show up, close off the road, litigation, litigation, litigation, finally, the person agreed to allow people to pass with signs posted saying "Private property, slow, no dust trails next 1 mi" and a noise ordnance from 8pm to 7am.

Well then I would make an amendment to the sign:

No barrel rolls.

Or just leave it open with a no trespassing sign. if they get injured, then they were trespassing, and they are liable.

Can't find exactly what I'd read before, but this alludes to it:

"Last fall [2012], he convened a group of large landowners in the West at the Flying D to talk about what they could do to knit their private lands into the tapestry of the public lands."

In some areas, if there's a precedent of long-term public use of a trail on property that becomes private or that a new landowner elects to close off, a case can be made for an easement for public use. Not sure if that applies to roads & motor vehicles, though.

While it is a bummer how much beautiful land is off limits due to private or government ownership, I sure wouldn't mind owning a private mountaintop.

I hear you, and i don't blame the guy for loving his little slice of America...I can only imagine how hard it would be to give that up were it me, but dude needs to let people pass with expectations of good stewards using his land, hell even set up a limited number of permits that you give out to keep out the riff raff and keeps tabs on your land like national parks do.

Not a bad idea. My local trail-building & advocacy organization has special use & easement agreements with several areas in the county. It can be done. I think it's a pretty safe bet that if you're motoring to 11,000 feet off road, you're not in it to be riffraff.

A road I drove on in Colorado had a sign next to it that said something like, "Property on both sides of road is PRIVATE! NO TRESPASSING! DRIVE AT OWN RISK!"
