I'm from the northern part. Born in San Diego but grew up in Auburn (about 45 miles north of Sacramento using 80). As for missing it, not so much. It's entirely to expensive to live there. I miss the aspect of being able to go surfing 3 hours away and snowboarding 2 hours the other direction, but other than that, I don't really miss it.

I grew up in the desert, I too miss having access to everything within about 2-4 hours.

California desert? As in Mojave? I heard that place is amazing for hooning. I was never able to get down there but I have an agreement with the wife that if we get stationed anywhere near the west coast next, I get a 2 door coupe sports car (probably going to be an FRS/BRZ) and I get to go to Bonneville.

Yessir, Twentynine Palms. I grew up on dirt roads. I used to take my '89 Tercel down washes and waterline roads. I got stuck axle-deep in someone's front yard once. It was great.

The Bonneville plan sounds great, I hope you get to do it!

That sounds awesome! I honestly wish I had more wide open expanses growing up. Instead I had forest trails to romp on.

Forests can be fun, but they kinda limit your ability to go fast.

We used to drive the back roads to Vegas; nobody for miles, you can easily run about 90 for a good portion of the trip (watch out for the whoops tho!), and make a 4-hour drive into a 3-hour drive. THAT was fun!

The forests were fun but, like you said, slow. For a reason though. You needed some good ground clearance to go where we were going.
