So last night my dad drops the bombshell on me about how he is now seriously looking into the "vintage" and new car market (He's a baby boomer with money to toss around). I would like some of your opinions so I can properly advise him. Here are a couple of the options we discussed last night:

List get crazier/less likely as it goes. He sees the later cars as investments he can a good return on and enjoy at the same time. Feel free to add suggestions if you have any!

An unmolested Datsun 240z (he owned one back in the day, currently owns 370z 40th anniversary)

E-type roadster (4.2L I-6)

E92 M3

Nissan GTR

F-type V8s or R

Ferrari 308 GTB

BMW 2002 Turbo

Ferrari Testarossa (Flat 12 FTW!)

Monstrous Jump

Ferrari F40 (Me: "you are shitting me right" Him: "no")

Original 289 or 427 Cobra (same as above but pants needed to be changed)

If he can afford an F40 or real Cobra, and is a serious glutton for punishment. DO IT!!!!!!!!!!

Do it for us Jalops who are broke students that will never be able to afford those cars...

As an investment and interesting value mixed with what an older man would want I assume the E-type would be a pretty solid fit for him.

That being said, no one really know if the current price inflation of classic cars is a bubble or not. Only time will tell for that one.

Some of those cars are all over the map. Is he looking for an actual investment or just a cool car that won't lose it's value?

Buying as an investment can be very hard to do and is NOT the same as buying a toy.

Cobra replica from factory five. Something you can do together, fast as shit and get to have the pride that you built it yourself. Or the Factory five Daytona Coupe, someday I'll build one.

He is all over the map in what he wants. He and my mom have always lived pretty modestly but now that my sister and I are independent he is just saying fuck that now.

From our conversation last night it seems more like a toy he can enjoy and not lose value.

A lot of signs lead to "bubble". There are not that many places to throw investment money right now that appear stable. But you never know, we aren't talking about the S&P here.

If he wants a toy to enjoy I'd cross off the F40 and the original Cobra. Ownership of one of those is not for the casual collector.

Does he do his own maintenance? That matters. If you buy a 308QV and you have to spend $1000 on service each year that may out pace any value gain by a large margin.

Is he looking to modify and screw around a bit? That matters too.

For the record, there is no way of knowing which cars will have a "good return" or not.

An F40 would be a decent investment, he certainly wouldn't lose any money if he were to buy one now and sell it later on down the road. I'm not sure if they'll go significantly up from where they are now, but if he maintains it, he'll have no problem making his money back. Percentage wise, the Testarossa could give him a very fair return in several years, prices for those are starting to climb higher and higher, but he'll be looking at maintenance costs if he drives it frequently (which he should). F-type will depreciate at first, given that it's a new car and production isn't about to stop. I feel the GTR would be a similar story. The F-type and GTR as investments would be a lot longer-term than the other cars in the list. A 308 GTB would be a good investment as well, the GTB is very desirable, as majority of 308's are GTS's. If he is looking at 308's though, make sure he doesn't get a 308i, even if it is a GTB body style. The "i" engines were not very good compared to the later Quattrovalvole engines, so definitely keep that in mind... The Cobra's are good investments as well, I don't see him losing money on either one of those cars in the future.

He can do his own maintenance, especially once he is retired (should be in the next 2-3 years). The only modification he would ever do is some of the electric system on the E-type just to make it more reliable.

The F40 and Cobra are proven winners but bring their own set of issues. I really don't know the full extent of his financial situation so he may just want an iconic toy to drive and maintain. His mindset would likely be: "I want something fun and collectible to hang on to for eternity. However, IF I need to sell it I won't lose money on it. The more I think about it, he has the collector/driver mindset not the invest-o-dust collector.

Ah, ok. Out of everything on that list, I think the best investment right now would be the Testarossa or maybe the 308 GTB (as long as it's not an i), as both of those cars are appreciating right now. And maybe the 2002 Turbo, I don't know what those are selling for and what the trend for those is currently.

Now is probably not the greatest time to buy an F40. It will appreciate in time but right now the value is up 60% in the past year (for a condition 3). That boat has passed for the time being. Original Cobras (late build '66) are up 30%.

I don't know any investor who would consider buying this high. We were flying high in 2006-2009 and look at the market volatility. A condition 1 '69 Z/28 went from $125,000 to $89,000 in one year. Then from January '13 to September '13 it went from $85,000 to $130,000.

All signs lead to an inflated market. Now is probably NOT the time to buy an investment. A fun car, sure, whatever. That's for a different purpose.

a 240z or 280z would be a nice car for the sentimental aspect considering his previous ownership of one and current Z car. Buying an extremely rare and collectable car as a toy is not a good idea IMO it will end up being more of a headache than a joy unless you guys are totally loaded.

Honestly, my pick would be an F40 or some classic 60s Ferrari. Since he can afford it, get a real halo car. BMWs, Nissans, even Jaaaaags are cool. But if he can seriously afford something really rare and cool, why not. He'll even get a new hobby of taking it out to cars and coffee and being the star of the show...

IMO, real estate is a poor investment for most people because it lacks liquidity. It just doesn't make sense unless you have tons of capital.

Also, from my research and what i've been seeing with the markets right now, we will probably see a tech bubble pop similar to the dotcom. I don't think it will be as severe though. More of a correction than a bust.

A lot of the established companies in the market have the fundamentals to back their prices but the speculative type companies will be in trouble.

He knows and is paying attention to the market. If prices dip to what their fair value is, he may capitalize on it. I noted that it is a large jump. The appeal of owning a TR is awesome but nowhere near that of an F40.

My grandparents inherited quite a bit of money, and they have their whole house paid off, granted they built it themselves, and they have lived there over 40 years, and when I say they built it themselves, I mean things such as doing their own wiring, and my mom has pictures and stories of her and her siblings (she is the youngest of 4) digging the hole for the foundation of the house which is a 2 storey house with a basement in it.

Alright, let me color this response with I'm getting up in years, servicing cars has become a lifestyle because it's most efficient at my income level currently and I have a real hard-on for designers that make fast/cool things but don't consider the maintenance. With that said:

How about a *production* cool/performance/prestiges sports car that doesn't require a tune-up every 6 weeks, or work every 12, or major garage time every 60 just to enjoy it? I don't know what on your list may have that, but if you're here posting and it's your dad, I'd bet (once you get past the 'cool vintage' factor) that having a performance daily drive would pay for itself if you could put 75K on it without major pains? (Maybe have misread this completely, so pardon's if so. Just trying to relate the energy level of the person to the energy required to keep the car going.)

FWIW I don't know anybody who would call an F40 driver an asshole. A 308, 360, or something like that maybe.

But an F40? I bet far more people get excited at seeing a rare car.
