Costs as much as an MX5*, eats 911 GT2's and most everything else on track, sounds like James Hetfield screaming America! and he buys his tires used from GT2 Teams. The answer isn't always MiatBRRAP-VWWOOP-VWOOP-VWOOP...
If you're not familiar this is a Modifieds chassis, or at the moment for a Whelen Modifieds series. They are meant to be abused at local circle track events, though some regional series are also on roadcourses.
I had this idea from coming across them in pictures then beheld this last year along with a gentleman by the name of Dell in a newer, lighter chassis in black running. Only him this year but after forgetting about it I looooved watching it rocket up the front straight flanked by a mix of stock, late model GT, T/A and Lemans racers. Last year there were a light few jabs amongst similarly classed fellows regarding their pedigree.
Since it was made for ovals the owner had to custom make a few equal length suspension rods and replace a few other things, along with the GT wing on the back. Given it was meant to survive being tossed over a track wall safety isn't much of an issue, as are parts that were meant to be replaced easily. What this old chassis lacks in suspention tunability and weight it makes up for in raw power and track panache, like a naked Trans-Am racer.
*Again, you can find these chassis on racingjunk.com and elsewhere for as cheap as a few grand.
I believe it lapped The Glen at an avg speed of 117mph and had a time somewheres under 1:20. Apparently he went faster but when I recorded that time I guess he couldn't get heat in the tires and later swapped them for fresher ones. I was going to ask what kind of engine he had but he had to jump in the long line for the pigroast. My ideal would be a Dart 383... Thank you Mr. Hellmers!

My Miata has it beat! It's not a roadster!
Love the look of those cars though.

It's a full on space frame, single seat, open wheel, race car with a big V8 on a set of slicks. The fact that it spanks anything road car based shouldn't be especially surprising. thought it probably is a bit too heavy and the suspension a little too dumb to compete with other purpose built road racers.
It is really cool that someone it taking it road racing regularly
HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

I wonder how hard it would be to get something like this road legal. Make the body a hatchback and you got a sweet DD.

There's one that's been re-purposed to be a hill climb racer in New England as well. It has been yumped.

Wait wait wait, Dusty likes cars that don't blast through the forest? What is the world coming to?!?
Just kidding. Yeah, it's a sweet build, something about driving a legit race car on the street with zero cares towards creature comforts sounds awesome. For example, this gem from Nitro Circus and a Trophy Truck.

Fun fact: I grew up a NASCAR fan and worked almost five years at area circle tracks.
Also it's not unusual for me to take one of the rally cars out to just cruise around in. I even took one to my high school reunion.
Also also, I wish that trophy truck were street legal...

Huh, didn't know you worked at a few tracks. If we ever meet in real life we'll have to swap stories.
In high school I wanted to build a street-legal Trophy Truck, the more I watch videos like that the more I wish I had the few hundred thousand dollars to make it happen.
