There were a lot of posts going around a while back about how us car guys should be taking public transport to get to work instead of driving.

Well I just wanted to check the distance of my new drive to work from my new house. And google maps gave me 2 car driving options and 1 bus option (I have no idea why).

Option 1: 20 minutes driving

Option 2: 24 minutes driving

Option 3: 5 buses plus walking, estimated at NINE HOURS AND 14 MINUTES.

Metro Detroit clearly does not have the infrastructure for serious public transport.

Thought you guys might get a good laugh at of the scenario.

Just for kicks, see what Google Maps says would be your BUS ROUTE to work. Don't include your address or anything, just post the time, let's see who can beat my 9 hours +!

UPDATE : I just re-did the search and it said 5 hours and 54 minutes or 6 hours and 1 minute. Not much better and still not funcional, but I thought I should share.

I'm 4 hours and 30 minutes from Livonia to Ann Arbor. A route that has me walking a total of 5 miles and a trip to Detroit Metro Airport.

I can't even imagine how you could be at 9+ hours...

There's no way I'd reach 9 hours, I could see the whole country, twice, in 9 hours by train.

I've got multiple offices I work at, but the one I frequent the most is 37 km (23 miles) away: 50 minutes for bus-train-bus. Car: 26 minutes, although 35-45 minutes is more realistic in rush hour traffic.

It would take me 9.5 hours to reach my girlfriend, if I take public transportation. She lives 850 km (528 miles) away if I were to drive, the trains probably travel 1000 km in those 9.5 hours.

This all depends on your local options. Due to the Big 3 influence, Detroit might as well be considered rural for these purposes. Even when I was living in LA, not known for their public transit, there was a decent train alternative to get to work in 20-30 minutes when my car was in the shop (before my bike had been shipped out). In Long Island, I could walk to a train station and visit my then-boyfriend in Manhattan much quicker (and cheaper) than driving and parking for the weekend.

FWIW, for me to take a bus from Royal Oak to my office 20 miles away would be an hour and a half, on one bus. My new office will be 8 miles away and take 40 minutes by bus or bicycle.

My summer job was about 20 mins away by car. Public transit is 1 hr 45 mins including 2.3 miles of walking.

7 minutes by car - 1.4 miles

29 minutes by foot - 1.5 miles

No bus goes to my job.

My daily commute was either 40 minutes by bus, 35 by bike, or 15 by car to get to college. I often went by bike, but in winter, I went by bus. When my parents were out of town, i took the car. These were all going down the same path.

It had me go from canton to ann arbor to downtown detroit then up to Farmington.

Haha, man I can reach the east coast of the US by driving from metro Detroit in the same amount of time it would take me to take the bus to work.

Yeah, public transit in a small town is a joke. When I was younger and found myself carless often I would walk rather than take the bus because I could get there faster.

I actually did just that on sunday with a friend. We both live in a smaller town outside of Munich and teach at schools in Munich. I drive 20 mins to the Munich trade fair and hop on the underground there. He drives to the station, takes the train to Munich and then changes to the underground. The difference is minimal. Driving all the way would be the fastest but there is no parking at my school at all.

I take public transport at school cause it is free and easy to access. Back home, I would need to drive 20 minutes just to get a 40 minute ride on a bus to get to a destination that is 20 minutes away. . .

Makes sense, Europe really has a much better public transport set up than the majority of the US.

I used to take the train/subway (it changed over to subway when entering the city) to NYC when I lived in Northern New Jersey, was much more efficient. I'm not anti-public transport if functional options are available.

You know, if public transportation was a viable option, I'd probably be more inclined to use it.

My drive should take 28 minutes. My bus commute 2 hours, 20 mins. And with the bus route you have to travel/walk through some rather unsavory neighborhoods. I think I'll take my car, thank you very much.

Yep. If it were more feasible I'd use it too. I used it to get around at Michigan State for 4 years, I'm no stranger to a bus lol.

It also gets really tough to even think about once you have a kid. My daily commute has 3 locations involved. House -> Daycare -> Work. Then Work -> Daycare -> House. I do the majority of pickup/drop off because my work tend to be so chill about arrival/departure times

COULD NOT CALCULATE!!!!!!!!!!!! 14 miles from 9 mile and us-23 to Haggerty and 12 mile. Just checked walking: 4hr 41min. Biking 1hr 37min

For me, it's 20-30 minutes by car, or forty minutes by bus. I drive, but I could probably manage to bus if I had to—it's just, I like not having to worry about keeping up with timetables, and as I have a car anyway...

There is no bus route to work unless I walk 4 miles into town to take a bus to the town next to where I work, and walk about an equal distance from my house to where I work.

If I had to walk, it would probably take me 2-3 hours. It's a 15 minute 6 mile drive with two left turns and two right turns.

Yep I've got 16 miles in 20-30 minutes I didn't check walking but it would be hours.
