I thought college internet was supposed to be good, unfortunately it fucking blows. The wifi cuts out constantly, I can't hook up my xbox to the high speed internet so I can't play online and now I've spent over an hour downloading the Horizon demo to 32%. Granted I was at class for the whole hour but still this is some bullshit. So later today I need to go find an ethernet cable that reaches the other side of my dorm so I can HOPEFULLY get some decent god damned internet.
On the flip side getting drunk and having class the next morning is cool and shitty.

Our wifi wasn't bad at Michigan, especially for how many people it had to serve, and they also had wired connections in the dorm rooms.
My sorority's wifi, on the other hand...

It works decent for phones and computers but printers consoles/anything without a web browser and the ability to download shit it really shits the bed. Whatever I guess I'll just get drunk and laugh at people.

At my school, we could go down to the IT department and they would give us 25ft+ ethernet cables just for asking nicely.

Must be all those jerks hooking up their playboxes and downloading the games. I went from dial up at home to a t1 in college it was a amazing. The it department had to tell me to stop using so much bandwidth.

I've had those before, most people always got done in half the time because we weren't idiots and/or knew how to follow instructions and procedures.

College internet is actually really good. The problem is that there's like 6000 other people on it at the same time.
I never wanted to work for IT at my school, but I got plenty of glimpses into how it's run, and it's managed pretty well, when you consider how many users are on simultaneously.
My school had one machine running two virtual servers that managed the client logon for every single user on campus. There's a lot of elegance in a solution that manages to be that simple, yet work very reliably. Pair that with the wifi hotspots that manage to avoid disconnecting and reconnecting when you pass through most buildings, and you have to be pretty proud of how well it does work. The load balancing isn't terrible, but just wait a couple more weeks. You'll get plenty of dropouts, and the network load will lighten in time. Just get a feel for the peak hours, and do your downloads before/after peak hours.

This!! My wifi is so spotty. It works well enough for my computer, but hardly works on my phone and simply doesnt work with my PS3. I ended up buying a 25ft ethernet cable and taped it around a door frame to reach the only place that makes sense to have my TV. It took 25 feet of cable to get to something 5.5 feet away from the ethernet jack... Oi.
