like any used cars, it really depends on how it was treated. Early S60's "typical things" include quick wearing front shock mounts, front lower control arm bushings, and the VERY important crankcase ventilation system. Timing belt is replaced every 10 year or 100,000 miles. Beside those typical thing, basic automotive maintenance is implemented

My friend owned one and it was an absolute maintenance nightmare

While they should be fixed by now, 2001s had neutral stop software that caused transmission issues. Expect nearly all front bushings (control arm, torque mount, engine mount) to be shot. Those are kind of the "not as typical" maintenance items. AWD could have angle gear issues, too.

so it would be better to get a fwd model?

Definitely less risky. Although if the angle gear did go south, you can pull the propshaft (driveshaft) and drive without it installed. You won't run into any issues. I did so on my XC for a while when my angle gear needed replacement.

Thats not too bad then, would just need to carry some tools.

Yep, the worst thing about removing the driveshaft is threading it out of the car. Otherwise, pretty simple operation.

Is that with you doing the work or do you have someone else do it?

Someone else. I wouldn't trust myself with the most basic of repairs.
