Airliner + firetruck = one of the coolest airplanes that doesn't get much glory these days. This DC-10 VLAT (Very Large Air Tanker) drop was along the Skyline ridge above Cache Creek on the northeast flank of the Horsethief Canyon Fire on September 12.

I think they try to surround the fire and contain it in a given area before dropping directly on it. The objective is to put the fire out by stopping it from spreading further. This is just my oppinnion and I could be completely wrong :)
