I finally saw a BMW X1 in the flesh

It's a lot smaller than I thought it was. I'm pretty sure it fit in the wheelbase of the Safari.

It's totally a wagon, plastic cladding be damned.

I like it, and the orange looks awesome in person.

I am in and out of them all day and at first I hated them, but now I think I'd take one over most new BMW's.

I thought the same thing upon first seeing one. It is so tiny and low to the ground.. its obviously a 1 series wagon.

2-Series and X1 are probably my two favorite Non-M BMWs right now.

I actually like these a lot more than all the other BMW suvs. Kinda like BMW made an older Subaru outback. Basically just a lifted wagon.

One of my neighbors has one. I thought it was an X3 for the longest time. It looks like and X3 but in every other way it's like a 3-series wagon.

I like the 228i manual and the M235i a lot. The 235i makes a fantastic noise.

I'm telling you, all I see are Silverados, F-150s, and Rams. And a plethora of non-lux SUVs. A neighbor has an A5 convertible now though!

Theirs has the M-Sport aero kit, I forgot that takes away the cladding.

The 5 is at least a little beefier in terms off appearance. But the X3 and X1 are indistinguishable.

The X1 towers over a real 1 series though, and its wheelbase is similar to a 2014 Camry. Nothing tiny or low about that vehicle, unless when you compare it to huge SUVs.

Here's a comparison of the 2012 1-series and X1.

A German magazine did a comparison. The (cheaper) 1 series scored far, far better when it comes to actually driving these vehicles. The tallness and the heft work against the SUV. http://www.autozeitung.de/auto-vergleich…

Yeah, I was quite surprised the first time I saw an X1 in the wild. Looked like a swollen hatchback. Still has the whole, not front wheel drive thing going for it. Can't say I dislike them.

I'll admit the hyperbole. However, it's definitely tall. Compared to the 3-series Touring (with the same drive train) the X1 weighs the same, yet is considerably shorter and taller. It's got CUV proportions.

In person, the proportions reminded me of my old Subaru Outback Sport (aka base slightly-lifted Impreza with a roofrack):

The M-sport takes care of the cladding, really cleans up the whole look of the car. The AWD versions are also the last vehicles in the BMW lineup with hydraulic PS! We enjoying driving it a lot more than the F31 wagon. *sigh* Unfortunately we only get these lovely cars in automatics :(

It's a real blast. The M-sport pack gives it more of a rear drive bias, it will do its limited 155mph all day long and be pretty damn stable. It can get a bit of a jump on the E90 before the V8 can wring out the revs.

What a crazy little car!! I think more people should buy this car. Too many people are obsessed with large CUVs/SUVs. I sat in the front and back of the X1 at the dealership and found it totally comfortable.

More folks definitely should! I have a co-worker who has an A-class Mercedes as a family hauler with two kids. You don't always have to have the biggest off-road monstrosity.
