It's 5am on a fine Monday morning, time to raise your hands in the air and count those digits. Unless you are some kind of polydactyly freak, like Anne Boleyn or !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , you will see a magic number, which in the world of BMW's M-cars, means only one thing: speed.

Well...maybe speed and power...and...don't forget repair costs. Fine. Take off your shoe and smack yourself in the face for each time you have purchased something other than an E39 (1998-2003) BMW M5. Don't do it again.

Kinja'd!!!

Tipper Jeff wrote us the following note: I saw your email today with the E28 M5, and I was reminded of the few E39 M5's in the Northeast for around the same money. I've recently become engrossed with researching these cars found out just how bad the depreciation is (bad for them, good for me?), but also the maintenance required ($). That being said, for $10k an E39 M5 sure would look good in my garage...since that's where it will be most of the time...waiting on me to replace parts. Jeff was also kind enough to send in a fine selection of those cars, so we wasted no time and put them in order of goodness.

Kinja'd!!!

5. 2000 6-Spd Blue Bomber

Coming in at fifth place (and don't think of this car as a loser, but it still beat every car in the world except 4 of them to make this list) is this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! offered for $9,999 in Newville, PA via craigslist. Expect to achieve automotive nirvana with the 4.9 liter S62 V8 good for 394 horsepower and 369 ft-lbs of torque.

Kinja'd!!!

4. 2003 Black Stripe Machine

Next is this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! offered for $12,500 in Inwood, WV via craigslist. Like all E39 M5s, it is shifted by a standard 6-speed manual gearbox that puts power to a limited slip differential out the back.

Kinja'd!!!

3. 2001 Imola Red Modified

If you like your M5s on the wild side, this next car might be more for your liking, it is a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! offered for $11,500 in Winchester, VA via craigslist. Most of the modifications on this car are cosmetic and it doesn't look bad for a modified example, if you are into that kind of thing.

Kinja'd!!!

2. 2000 Low Mile And Clean

Sitting in the 2nd spot is this pre-face lift (MY2001+ examples have angel eyes headlights, celis tail lights, 3-spoke sport steering wheel and a few other changes) !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! offered for $19,900 in Carlisle, PA. This M5 has only 42k miles on the odometer is one of the nicer E39 M5s you will find around, but the price is sure high.

Kinja'd!!!

1. 2006 V10 Powered Warship

What just happened? An E60 M5 just won the competition for best E39 M5? Yup. In first place is this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! offered for $26,995 in Hagerstown, MD via cragislist. Why? Well, if you are looking at the E39 and thinking of how much speed you can get for a little price while risking catastrophic repair bills, why not multiply all of those numbers by two? Twice the thrill, twice the price and twice the bills — sounds great!

If you guys want the V10, there have been a couple M5's for $19-23k on the DC CL . 80-100k miles, and $10k for a personal warranty? Not bad. I've been considering it half seriously even :/

Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this - 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go to tech tab for work detail

Be careful of those carmax warranties. They exclude quite a lot of potentially expensive repairs. Among the items excluded: any emissions equipment, clutch disks/pressure plates/throwout bearing, brakes pads/rotors, shocks and other suspension components, cooling system components, exhaust components, plus any maintenance item (including major services like timing chains). The cost of owning an M5 will still be quite high- even with a warranty.

The biggest problem with #1 is that I would have to look at it at least twice a day. The E60, to me, is the worst example of the "Bangle Butt" and makes that wailing V-10 not worth it for me (says the man that drives a beautiful E39).

Depends. 2002 &2003 models are holding strong. Excellent condition normal mileage (100k) examples are going for over $20k and have been appreciating the past 6 months. The earlier years and modified example prices drop like a rock and stay there.

honest question. my brother got an e39 m5 and is having some trouble with it... shocker. It was throwing cam position sensor errors, and he appears to have that resolved. Now it is misfiring. The car only has 30k on it, and has fresh plugs. Any thoughts?

I haven't checked new M3 lease rates, but I'm guessing in the $700/month rate after a $5000 deposit? Not sure if you'll burn through that much in the M5...but I guess it depends on if anything goes wrong.

How much trouble-shooting are you expecting in this forum? Most of these guys can't even replace their own M5 clutches or replace the vanos gears... Jalop in name only.

I laugh at your 10K clutch swap. It'd cost me a grand and 12 hours on my back (and a couple days recovery time). Just did an M3 clutch not too long ago. Another reason to hate BMW's.

Compression check is the first thing I'd do. Then if it's a specific cylinder, switch coilpack and then injector in that order. See if the problem follows either part.

Oh, I have no doubt. I've never been into MBs, but there was a time when I wanted an M3, so I'm fairly aware of what they cost new. That time has passed, however, as I am more interested in a car whose maintenance won't kill my bank account.

Kinja'd!!!0

Would be a great deal for the miles at that price if it wasn't for a potentially costly gearbox issue. Also burning through a quart of 10W60 ever 1k miles is never a good thing, but at least the owner is honest about it. 1 qt per 1k miles is about the limit that any OEM will set for buying back a car on a Lemon claim, but that is for a new car. Oil is cheap, engine rebuilds are expensive, so I guess you drive it till it ruins the cats.

Basic wear-and-tear items easily fixed at home (except for the clutch change). Nobody is going to warranty a clutch and throwout bearing.

My brother loves cars, which is great. But he loves the idea of cars more than he actually loves them. The other day he asked what he would need to do to get a lift installed in his regular height garage. Mind you, he has never so much as changed his own brake pads. BUT.... Because he wildly overspent on his BMW, and is starting to hate it, it will most likely end up in my hands. That is why I ask. Plus, you never know, someone might have had an experience similar to his

Kinja'd!!!2

There are specific procedures you work through with any car problem. Misfire is either, no compression, problem with the spark, problem with the fuel or a problem with when the spark happens. I'd say the most common cause with most cars is coil packs. If all or say half of the cylinders do it, I'd look for something that only impacts that bank. Maybe common grounds for the coils/injectors. Common ground or fuel rail. If it's just a single cylinder, you look at that cylinder.

The reason mis-fire is bad enough to set a CEL and flash the CEL light is that it can destroy the cats.

I swore off BMW's some time ago. Few cars drive as well but, their reliability is way down at domestic car levels. I got rid of my M3 because I was constantly fixing it. You end up chasing your tail. By the time you fix everything, the first thing you fixed is broken again (I'm talking about YOU power steering leak).

Also, I hate them. I owned mine for 9 months before selling due to cost of upkeep. I paid $8500 for the car (530i Sport with 5MT 99k miles), spent $4200 in repairs over the next 9 months and had it totaled in a hailstorm. Insurance wrote me a check for $7356 which after the deductible came to $6356. :/
