is there? I have never seen an M5 of any generation in this price range before, so I am skeptical, and few pics don't really help.

Judging by the body panels, I don't think it is an actual M5. I bet its a 540 with an M5 slapped on the back.

I've seen two before on Houston's craigslist. One turned out to be a 550 with M badges but the other one was the real deal. Unfortunately i think it had something wrong with the engine but it ran and drove. Either way, stay far far away from it

Its weird with E39 M5s. If you abuse them like a ruthless son of a cucumber, then it thanks you, and runs even better. But, obviously an abused car is never a good sign. Id say only get one if you don't care of paying what it costs to run it. Because you really want an E39 M5.

Right before I went out actively looking at cars, I found an (I think?) 01 M5 6 speed. I needed it. It was 11,500 with just under 100K miles. That would have been both an amazing and terrible idea all at the same time. It also seemed to good to be true.

It's going to have massive amounts of deferred maintenance. I used to live one town over from Desoto. Lots of 10-15 year old luxury cars, none of them working 100% properly.

100% An M5 would have a much more aggressive front bumper and a "diffuser" rear bumper with 4 exhaust pipes. Im a massive Bimmerphile so this stuff sticks out like a sore thumb. That said the 540 is still a damn good car with almost 300HP, but, like this, is often tried to be passed off as an M5.
