Yes, do this. I've managed to convince one family member to buy an Audi. And I don't even work for them.

Must be a smart man.

Maybe you should talk him into a GC, its better and has that Chrysler relation to a Ram.

I think you're confusing nice with larger. Don't worry, a large number of American brand buyers make the same mistake. I prescribe 10 CCs of a VW test drive as soon as possible. Then you'll see :)

He retired early from a desk job with the county. He did field work for about 10 years before he moved in the office and thinks he needs a truck to be a man...

I drive a Beetle, so you know how I feel lol

I can't say I support this endeavor. I think SUVs are the most worthless class of vehicle. Want to haul people? Buy a minivan. Want to haul stuff and people? Buy a truck. How often do most people have more than 4-5 others to haul around?

retired eh? The man deserves to drive whatever he wants damnit! That's the way I see it. You can do a lot more things with a truck obviously. He's got the time to do it. Maybe not now but soon enough. Yeah a Tourage has more cargo than a Civic, but $50k+ and worrying about scratching expensive plastic paneling is no fun. In his truck, just throw shit in the back and lets go! (One example a trillion) Say for instance he want to take the grill out to the lake to relax on a nice day with the family. Grill may not be big but it's hella ashy and greasy, would you risk your precious Tourage's interior for a grill and no extra seats for the family? You can undermind him as "he wants to feel like a man" heck, he might even say it. I'm thinking logical but stereotypes are a real thing with vehicles. Personally, I will always respect a man and his well loved workhorse of a truck. I've owned 7 German cars and my 09 Silverado. The only vehicle I've honestly felt proud of was my truck. Hauling heavy gear all around the Texas Gulf Coast in all surfaces and conditions busting ass at work every morning and hot day with me. I'm no car enthusiast, but I am truly sad having to sell my truck.

We're actually better both on-road and off-road. The Touareg has done both Moab and Dakar. And its built on the same platform as the Cayenne, so you can imagine how it does on solid ground. And more for your money isn't really true either. By the time you option the GC up comparatively it's going to be as much as the Touareg.

good luck. My uncle just bought a full can Silverado. He has 2 kids. One just bought a house. The other just got married. It's his commuter car. He only wanted a Silverado and nothing else would do

I agree with this. The Jeep is a better value, has three of the best engines on the market available, is great to drive, proven off road (in street trim), and has uConnect which I've found to be one of the best, if not the best, infotainment system on the market. Though I also prefer the Durango to the Jeep because I could care less about off-roading.

Have you sat in a $45k Ram? It's a pretty damn nice truck. I will admit I'm a little biased towards Mopar and against VW though ;). Respect your passion for them.

I have actually (I trained at our CDJR store). 45 does get you some decent materials in the Ram, but for me at least, the dynamics just aren't there.

I guess it's just a matter of preference. I haven't been in the newest Touareg, but most of the VW's I've been in had a tighter feel to them. Not necessarily smaller, but everything is less spread out than in something like the Ram.

I want to agree but Rams are just so damn nice now.

My uncle's '11 Laramie is hands down the nicest truck I've ever sat in.

And dat Hemi.

Plus, if the man likes his Ram, let him keep buying them!

Being that the Touareg is about 75% Porsche, it pretty much has the same "driver-focused" cockpit.

LOL. When those first came out, our family friend and VW/Audi mechanic called them "Toe Rags" and refused to work on them. /coolstoryme

On the bright side, you must be on pretty good terms with your in-laws to intentionally bother the FIL about trading in a perfectly good vehicle he likes for one he doesn't want.

A Touareg? Why not an X5 or ML350? Or even a JGC diesel (if one must have a Chrysler product)?

Also it depends on how much towing or hauling that is done. My dad was considering buying a pickup because reasons not comprehensible. I just mentioned that its more vehicle to park, not as comfortable for commuting, and a tad impractical unless you need to tow over 2.5 tons.

So he bought a Wrangler 4door.

just when you say he deserves better, since VW doesn't have really have the best record when it comes to reliability. I have no problem with VW, but it shows so much that you now work for a VW dealer.

VW over-hyped the german engineering thing, a very long time ago.

Not saying they are better, but in the long run, the Chrysler will cost less on repairs.
