The Mercedes 300 is the car known for reaching the highest mileage on average. 300,000 on one of them is about 100,000 miles on anything else. It's perfectly usable as long as there are no major mechanical faults caused by bad service (and they're cheap to fix if there are).

Mercedes Benz started becoming unreliable after the W123.

It's a NP from me. It's the ultimate utilitarian transport.

I was unaware that they could live that long, I still wish it had a manual :(

Over-engineered heavy parts, timing chains (instead of belts) non-interference engines, mechanical (instead of vacuum or digital) instruments, a shape that didn't rust easily, etc. They're used as Taxis internationally (still) and generally have a lifespan as a taxi of around 700,000km or 450,000 miles before they are retired.

I would argue that the interior is the fastest-wearing part of the car, after the bodywork.

Likewise, the parts for them are dirt cheap depending on where you live because of their mass production and use as fleet vehicles.

the only FWD mercedes's that I know about are A and possibly b class. Almost exclusively RWD in America with AWD becoming increasingly popular.

This isn't a 2002 Benz with 300k. This is a w123 diesel with 300k. Still a baby. The engine is very reliable. I think the transmissions will go first.

I have seen some early 80s 240d's with a manual. There is potential for a swap.

I'd totally recommend it if manual. I eyed up a green, manual, non wagon one for about that price.

Added note: I was looking at a 300D rather than 300TD. The turbo is wagon only, so I think it's worth coping with automatic.
